As part of the McLean Game Refuge’s Force for Nature campaign, a new memorial bench now rests along Esker Road overlooking Spring Pond, donated by campaign committee member and McLean resident Deb Carey in memory of her husband, Bob. Deb and Bob shared many hikes at the McLean Game Refuge, and this spot is now a place for all to pause, reflect, and enjoy the beauty they loved together. Thank you, Deb, for this meaningful gift.

Our memorial benches are made with red cedar cut and milled at the Game Refuge. Learn more about the Game Refuge and the Force for Nature campaign at www.McLeanCare.org/game-refuge/.

National Nonprofit Day was established to recognize and support the critical work of nonprofit organizations and the contributions we — along with our team members, volunteers, and donors — make in our communities and the world. At McLean, we're dedicated to creating an environment that serves older adults as they continue to grow, pursue wellness, and contribute to the community. And we have long been known in the Farmington Valley as the place to go for top-rated senior healthcare services, including assisted living, memory care, nursing care and rehab services, home care, and hospice.

McLean also supports the broader Simsbury community by offering "McLean Presents" events, including musical and theatrical performances and a summer concert series — all free of charge and open to the public. We sponsor internships for college students at the McLean Game Refuge, and operate the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers meals to homebound seniors in our area. To everyone who shares in making our mission your mission, we say THANK YOU.

It’s no secret that exercise is good for improving your fitness level – and that means it’s good for “everyday” things like getting out of a chair. Our Boundless Wellness team can show you! Call 860-658-3750 to learn more about our 55+ Boundless Wellness membership.

Here are some tips from our Boundless Wellness team!

Start your day with a glass of water. After a full night of sleep, your body is naturally low on fluids. Drinking water first thing helps rehydrate your cells, supports digestion, and gently wakes up your system before coffee or food. It also helps flush out toxins, boosts your metabolism, and may ease joint stiffness.

Then consider choosing a savory breakfast instead of a sweet one. While pastries or sugary cereals may feel comforting, they cause a sharp rise in blood sugar followed by a crash. This quick drop can leave you feeling tired, irritable, and craving more sugar. Over time, repeated sugar spikes can also promote fat storage, especially around the belly. A savory breakfast with protein, fiber, and healthy fats (such as eggs with vegetables or avocado on whole grain toast) helps keep you full longer and your energy more steady.

A limited number of community memberships to McLean's Boundless Wellness program are available to those 55+. Call us at 860-658-3750 for information.
