“A former Green Beret and orthopedic surgeon, Paulsrud found his true calling in caring for patients with substance use disorder. His work shaped addiction treatment systems in Sioux City and left a lasting impact on countless lives.”

“Recovery gave me back a life,” says David Paulsrud (59MD), the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Service.

A former Green Beret and orthopedic surgeon, Paulsrud found his true calling in caring for patients with substance use disorder. His work shaped addiction treatment systems in Sioux City and left a lasting impact on countless lives. Now in his 90s, he continues to give back to patients and providers with wisdom and compassion. What a great evening recognizing the impact that overdose deaths have had in our community. Over 50 people participated in our luminary service and many left with the ability to save a life with Naloxone (Narcan). Many thanks to the Rosecrance staff and clients who helped with preparations and clean up! Clients had created the luminary bags that you see in the pictures below. Special thanks to Chaplain Connie Miller for her inspiring words and prayers.
