This inspiring woman embodies visionary leadership in community service, empowering others through her remarkable journey. Beginning her career in behavioral and child health, she advocated for programs dedicated to mental health and child wellness at Siouxland Community Health Center. At only 37 years old, she took on the role of CEO at Siouxland Mental Health Center, where she spearheaded growth and established the Child and Adolescent Center to provide compassionate care for young people. She successfully obtained a $241,515 grant for maternal and child health, an annual $137,570 SBIRT grant for universal alcohol and substance screening, and a $4 million CCBHC grant that expanded psychiatric care, crisis response, substance use treatment, and evidence-based practices. Through her ability to secure substantial grant funding, she empowered vulnerable populations by improving services. Her journey showcases a profound commitment to underserved communities, merging clinical expertise with policy development to enhance mental health systems in the Siouxland region. In recognition of both her personal and professional life journey, we honor Sheila Martin with this year's Women Developing the Community award.
Congratulations Shela, from all of us at Women Aware's staff and board.
