Understanding Autism 💙

At the Sioux City Police Department, we are committed to serving every member of our community with compassion, patience, and respect—including individuals on the autism spectrum.

Autism is not always visible. During interactions, a person with autism may:
• Avoid eye contact or not respond right away
• Have difficulty following verbal commands
• Be sensitive to lights, sounds, or physical touch
• Repeat movements or words when overwhelmed

These are not signs of defiance—they may be signs of stress or sensory overload.

Our officers are trained to recognize these differences and adjust their approach by:
• Slowing down communication
• Using clear, simple instructions
• Allowing extra time to respond
• Reducing sensory triggers when possible

If you or a loved one has autism, consider letting officers know during an interaction. It helps us respond in the most appropriate and supportive way.

Understanding leads to better outcomes—for everyone. 💙
