Our DNA
The Siouxland Medical Education Foundation was established in 1975 as a joint venture between the University of Iowa and Siouxland’s hospitals- MercyOne and Unity Point St Lukes. Under the leadership of Gerald McGowan, MD, The Siouxland Medical Education Foundation was established to improve the health of Siouxland through medical education and patient centered care. The Siouxland Medical Education Foundation is known to many area residents as the Family Medicine Center and is located at 2501 Pierce Street, Sioux City, Iowa.
Our family medicine residency program is the only residency program in northwest Iowa. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Over 230 residents have graduated from the program since 1975 and over half are practicing within 100 miles of Sioux City.
We strive to be a collaborative and innovative organization that improves the quality of every life we touch by demonstrating excellence in education and patient care. We are committed to working in a team environment with patients to focus on meeting your healthcare needs. We respect the inherent dignity of each individual person without regard to age, race, ability, gender, orientation, identity or creed. We believe diversity of thought contributes to a deep learning and innovative culture committed to continuous improvement for the betterment of all.
We believe compassion is a relationship between equals and is realized when we recognize our shared humanity. In our ongoing efforts to do what is right and just we aim to extend compassion to all and eliminate the disparities within healthcare. Throughout generations, we are proud to carry on this tradition.
