Hey man,
YOUR LACK OF FRIENDSHIPS IS KILLING YOU 😵😧
-The U.S. is experiencing a “friendships recession” and men have been hit the hardest
-Studies have found a gender-specific link between loneliness in men and increased suicidal ideation
-Social isolation can weaken the immune system and make you more likely to suffer from
✔️ Alzheimers
✔️ High blood pressure
✔️ Sleep disruptions
✔️ Heart disease
✔️ Diabetes
✔️ Inflammation
✔️Cancer
Loneliness is one of the greatest threats to men’s health. Isolation is one of the leading contributors to lifestyle vices and diseases alike, including smoking, high blood pressure, inflammation, heart disease, sleep disruptions, diabetes, and cancer (APA).
Prolonged loneliness triggers signal hormones that lead to degeneration cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally. Tragically, loneliness has been linked with significantly increased suicidality among men, especially young men (PubMed).
But making new friends sometimes...sucks.
Raise your hand if...
--> “It was easy to build friendships in college…we just went to classes together/played sports together/studied together/partied together. As soon as I graduated, I had no idea how to start a friendship without those easy structures.”
--> “I had friends until I had kids…then family life absorbed all my extra time and energy and I let my friendships slowly drift off. Now I’m not sure how to recover them, or even if I can.”
--> “My coworkers used to be my closest friends…but now we all work from home. I never realized that working side-by-side or having water-cooler conversations with these guys was keeping our relationship afloat.”
--> “I remember having bourbon nights and basketball scrimmages before Covid…but those things got cut off suddenly in 2020 and I guess we just never picked it up again. I didn’t think it was that important.”
Enough of the bad news.
