The pride in the work of the farmer is nothing short of amazing. There is no vacation time, or sick days. You don't get to call out knowing someone will be there to pick up your work, you work through it. You rely on your friends and family, even then, it's the hardest thing you have to do, ask for help.
The su***de rate among those working in agriculture is 1.5 times higher than that of other occupations. Additionally, over 25% of farmers report experiencing mild to severe depression and anxiety symptoms.
It's truly a thankless job. People don't understand the work and hours that go into this thing that others call a job. But it's more than a job. It's a way of life. It's your heart and soul put into caring for the land and livestock. It's tending to the farm, while raising and supporting your family. It's tractor rides with the kids, rides to check the livestock and the fence. It's bundling up and going out into the brutal cold, treading through multiple feet of snow to make sure the water isn't frozen. It's doing the pig chores despite having pneumonia. It’s bailing hay on the hottest day of the year. It's closely watching the weather to time planting right. It's sleepless nights in the fall to get crops out before the snow. A farm, filled with hard work, dedication perseverance, and a whole lot of heart.
We see you and we appreciate you more than words can express. It's time to let mental health providers help take care of you. A healthy farm needs a healthy you.
