South Dakota Safety Council To make South Dakota a safer and healthier place to live,
work, and play

Since 1949 the South Dakota Safety Council has partnered
with our members to protect their people and their bottom line. Our mission is very straightforward,
“To make South Dakota a safer and healthier place to live,
work, and play”. The bottom line is for our members to call or e-mail us when
they are working with safety goals. Often times we can save them time and/or money with
existing program templates, resources, or training.

School’s in Session! 🚌🚸✏️
Sharpen those pencils and your focus, because it’s Back-to-School season across South Dakota! That means more buses on the roads, more kids walking and biking and more reasons to stay extra alert.
Drivers:
🛑 Slow down in school zones
🚌 Never pass a stopped school bus
👀 Watch for kids at crosswalks, intersections and between parked cars
Pedestrians & Cyclists:
📵 Ditch distractions (yes, phones too!)
🚲 Use sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes where available
👂 Listen up and look both ways - make eye contact with drivers before crossing
Let’s make the grade in safety this school year. Whether you're behind the wheel, on foot or pedaling to class – stay alert, stay patient and stay safe!

🚨 Drivers — look alive.

Thousands of motorcyclists will be heading home from the rally over the next few days.

They’ve been riding for hours. Some are tired.
And motorcycles? They’re smaller, harder to spot, and often sit right in your blind spot.

That quick mirror check before you change lanes?
Might not be enough.

👉 Look twice
👉 Check your blind spots
👉 Give riders space

You’re in a vehicle. They’re not.
Your extra second of awareness could save a life.

🌙 Sturgis Safety Tip: Night rides need extra caution.

The last Saturday of Rally means packed streets, tired riders, and a long ride home—often in the dark.

✅ Make sure your headlight is clean and working
✅ Slow down—vision is limited, and hazards are harder to spot
✅ Wear reflective gear or something that stands out
✅ Ride with a clear head and full focus
✅ Don’t take unnecessary risks—your decisions matter more at night

The rally may be winding down, but safety never should. Ride smart tonight.

You might have been at the rally for days now, or had a long ride up there across the state or country — riding hard, staying up late, maybe celebrating a little too much. 😅
It’s all part of the fun, but now’s the time to check in with yourself.

Even without alcohol, things like:

😴 Fatigue
☀️ Heat
💊 Medications (yes, even over-the-counter ones)
😫 Stress

can all chip away at your ability to ride safely.

This “Pathway to Impairment” shows how your rider readiness drops over time — even if you haven’t had a single drink.

✅ Take breaks
✅ Stay hydrated
✅ Know your limits-- you might need to skip a ride and stay back at camp

🚫 Sturgis Weekend Safety Tip #3: Don’t drink and ride.
Even one drink slows reaction time and affects judgment—on a bike, there’s no margin for error.
✅ Plan a sober ride
✅ Use Rally shuttles or rideshare
✅ Keep yourself and others safe

Your bike deserves better than a buzzed rider.
