The SICK has hit Sioux Falls!
We have heard many of you talk about yourselves, your children, your family members, and the schools around the area who have all been fighting off so much of the junk that is going around - RSV, mono, whooping cough, both bacterial and viral pneumonia, strep throat, just to name a few.
As many of you know, I recently fell victim to "the pneumonia." Although, I am well on my way to a full recovery, the process of recovery and the lingering effects of illness and treatment don't go away over night. So I am here to remind you of a couple things!
#1 - Get Adequate Amounts of QUALITY Sleep - 7 to 9 hours of sleep to allow your body to rest, recover, repair and regenerate.
#2 - Eat a Well Balanced, Nutrient Dense Diet - Fill your plate with color from nutrient-rich foods such as lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables and fruits.
#3 - Continue to practice regular movement and exercise.
#4 - Stay Well Hydrated - Water helps to flush toxins out of the body and supports proper function of our bodies immune cells.
#5 - Create New Skills to Manage Stress - Create routines of prayer, meditation, breath work, yoga, or journaling to help you manage your stress.
#6 - Get ADJUSTED! - We talk about the stressors on our nervous system (the physical, chemical, and emotional stressors). Adjustments to the spine improve nervous system function, affecting the whole body!
I don't do any of the above perfectly myself, but I do know that being a generally healthy person, my body was able to put up a very good fight against "the pneumonia." Acute infection had spread throughout my left lung and into the upper lobe of my right lung with a partial collapse of my left lung and I was still managing to breath room air with an average of 96-98% oxygen saturation in my blood. Besides a nasty looking chest x-ray, I simply had a high fever and a slightly elevated heart rate. Even at my worst (which was pretty miserable) my body was still performing like the marvelous creation it was meant to.
Our bodies are designed to fight this junk and they can do it beautifully if we support them properly! Are interventions needed on occasion? YES! I will touch on the topic of supporting your body during illness as well as post illness/treatment at a later date.
Once again, this is a friendly reminder to treat your one and only body well because in return, it will treat you well too! That is neat!
