Research Updates: 🧬

Dr. Jill Weimer, Dr. Jon Brudvig, and Mitch Rechtzigel published a new study in Communications Medicine on CLN3 Batten disease using a pig model.

The team found changes in the blood that can be used to track when disease starts and how it progresses, giving clues for earlier detection and development of a much needed biomarker tool for use in clinical trials.

Happy Future Generations Day! 🌟

Today is about recognizing that the world we create today—our health, environment, and choices—can directly impact the lives of future generations.

At the Baack Lab, research led by Abigail Klein helps show how early-life conditions can shape health not just in one lifetime, but across generations.

Big news in cell biology! 🧬

Dr. Kyle Roux received a $2.28M R35 grant from the NIH to study how the cell’s nucleus is protected and what happens when it is damaged.

His team will develop new tools to track the effects of a compromised nucleus, study how molecules move in and out of the nucleus and map the proteins that protect the nucleus across different tissues—work designed to reveal key insights into cell health and disease.

Two undergraduate SPUR students from the University of South Dakota recently presented their research at the 2026 South Dakota Undergraduate Research Poster Session at the South Dakota State Capitol.

This event brings undergraduate researchers face-to-face with state legislators, with only two students selected from each state school to present their scientific posters.

Congratulations to our SPUR students who presented their work:

🔬 Meet Caleb, an intern in the de la Puente Lab and a student at Augustana University.

Originally from Mankato, Minnesota, Caleb joined Sanford Research to gain hands-on experience in a medicine-driven lab environment as he prepares for a future career as a physician.

This summer, he’s learning specialized lab techniques to measure important molecules around cells and better understand how cells communicate to each other.

Meet Nardos, a spring intern in the de la Puente Lab from Dakota State University! 🌟

She applied to Sanford because she wanted a place where coding and biology could go hand in hand. 💻🔬

Nardos is excited to apply her computer science skills to ovarian cancer research, starting by building an image analysis pipeline with CT-FIRE to turn complex data into actionable insights about the tumor microenvironment.
