August 9th marks International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples!

This day helps raise awareness of the needs of indigenous population groups. It was adopted by the United Nations in December 1994.

Indigenous Peoples live all around the world and own, occupy, or use around 22% of global land area. Indigenous Peoples represent the greater part of the world's cultural diversity and speak an overwhelming majority of the world's estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.

As we bring awareness and appreciation, we also recognize that Indigenous Peoples from around the globe share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct people. They continue to be confronted with marginalization, extreme poverty, and other humans rights violations.
