ā€œI don’t want my daughter to go through what I went through with my mom, and what she went through with her mom…it’s time to break the cycle.ā€

Kelly Kalkofen of Oregon is Alzheimer's Impact Movement’s (AIM) March Advocate of the Month!

During her mother’s journey with Alzheimer’s, Kelly turned to the Alzheimer’s Association for support and began volunteering. She gravitated towards community education because of her experience as an educator. As she shared all the ways to join the fight to as a volunteer, she found herself being drawn to advocacy.

Now Kelly is a regular at Oregon State Advocacy Days and has attended AIM Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C. She even brought her daughter Grace with her to Capitol Hill. The two shared their family’s story with lawmakers and urged them to support the bipartisan .

ā€œMy reason to advocate started out very small, for my little circle, for my mom, for my daughter. Now it’s just grown into something huge. It really is the spirit of the fight, and the cause, and what the Alzheimer’s Association stands for.ā€

We know that members of the LGBTQ+ community can face unique challenges when dealing with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. And we believe that all communities should have a fair and just opportunity for early diagnosis and access to risk reduction and quality care.

That’s why, alongside our national partners, we provide resources for LGBTQ+ people impacted by dementia: alz.org/lgbtq.

During National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week, and always, we remain committed to advancing health equity.
