Being in the community with information is a strong part of Health Connect of South Dakota's work. This past week we were at the Turner County Fair and met over 2600 attendees during Health Connect's "Welcome to Wellness : Put Your Best Health Forward" mini-health fair! Today was the Celebrating Families event hosted by Prairie View Prevention Services! Over 900 attended that back to school event!

Tomorrow is an event hosted by Wheelchair Adventures at Sertoma Park ... a variety of adaptive equipment will be available to learn about. the event is 3-5!

Words carry weight, and the wrong ones can deepen stigma and discourage people from seeking help. Using person-first language such as “person with a substance use disorder” emphasizes that someone has a condition, and it does not define them. Terms like “addict,” “drug abuser,” or “junkie” reinforce harmful stereotypes and can isolate individuals who are struggling.

By choosing accurate and respectful language, we can reduce shame, support dignity, and encourage people to access the treatment and care they need. Let’s speak with empathy and understanding, because words truly do matter.
