The Season of Commitment continues and this week we’re super happy to share that .larson3 , of the Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors, has decided to continue her running career at South Dakota State University next year! Well done, and congratulations, Emery!

A great friend of ours since her days at Chester High School, Emery’s marks on South Dakota sports are ones for the history books. In fall 2022, her freshman year, Emery ran to a Class B State Championship title in cross-country, while earlier that spring, as an 8th grader, she snared 2nd place finishes in the 800 meters, 4x400, 4x800 and SMR on the track.

In fall 2023, then a sophomore, Emery picked up right where she left off, repeating as the Class B state champion in Class B cross-country, while again, earlier that spring, on the track, she garnered a 4th place finish in the 800 meters, 2nd place in the SMR, and 1st place state titles in both the 1600 and 3200 meters!

With the arrival of the 2024 school year and her family’s move to Pierre just weeks before, Emery didn’t miss a beat, finishing 5th among her Class AA competitors in the state cross-country meet. And once more, as part of the previous spring’s track season (while still at Chester High), Emery secured 2nd place podium spots in the 800 meters and 1600 meters, respectively, while repeating as the Class B State Champion in the 3200 meters!

With the fall 2025 cross country season having just finished—and with it, a Top 20 finish at the State Meet—we should note that Emery’s athletic accomplishments are not just related to running. A top performing volleyball and basketball player during all this time, Emery contributed mightily to Chester High School winning a state volleyball title, as well as her earning 1000+ points in her prep high school basketball career.

Well done, Emery! We look forward to seeing your career to continue at South Dakota State!

In our continuing efforts to give props, high-5s, shoutouts and “that-a-kid” kudos to athletes we’ve come to know so well, we would be beyond remiss if we let another day go by without sharing our congratulations for Sioux Falls Christian sensation, .maddox , and her recent announcement of committing to run as a Duke University Blue Devil next year!

Following on the heels of a monster spring track season which saw her atop the SD State Track Meet podium in the 800m (3rd place), 1600m (1st place), 3200m (2nd place) and 4x400m Relay (1st place), Ellie established new PRs in early June at the Magis Miles Invite, running a blistering 4:45 in 1600. From there, she traveled west to Eugene, OR, and Nike Outdoor Nationals, taking 26th and 12th, respectively, in the 1 mile and 3000m, against the country’s top competition.

And that’s all just in the last 6 months! Previous years on the track, dating back to 2021 and her 7th grade year have, by our count, seen Ellie earn 10 medals at the SD State Track Meet, with all but one being a Top 3 finish. Amazing!

On the cross-country course, Ellie’s achievements match her on-the-track success, including besting the field to become Class A State Champion in 2021 and then taking 2nd place in 2024. This fall, half-way through the season, Ellie has (so far) recorded the 7th fastest 5K in the US, while also finishing 5th in the Championship Division at the nationally-recognized Roy Griak Invitational in the Twin Cities in mid-September.

Having seen this young lady battle through an injury that kept her from running for 6 months—only to emerge on the other side even faster, better and more determined—we can’t wait to see what the future has in store at the next level! All the best, Ellie…and again, congratulations!

We’re playing a bit of catch-up with our shout-outs, and we’ll be sure to get back on task. That said, we couldn’t be more excited to share the recent announcement by Sioux Falls Christian’s and her plans to continue her distance running career next year at Dordt University!

A dependable and durable mainstay on a team that just seems to hit reload every year, Natalie’s progress from Day 1 of 7th grade has been nothing short of extraordinary, with Top 8 finishes in the last three SD State High School Cross Country meets.

Meanwhile, on the track, Natalie has shown incredible versatility in everything from long sprints to distance events. At the 2025 state track meet, she snared 8th place in the 400m, and 1st place finishes as part of the 4x400, 4x800 and SMR teams. In 2024, Natalie clocked a Top 10 finish in the 3200m, and two more 1st place finishes as part of the 4x800 and SMR teams; while 2023 saw podium finishes at the state meet in the 1600m, 3200m, 4x800 and SMR!

Now in her senior year, it has been a pleasure to see how her commitment and dedication to Coach VanderLeest’s program has led her to this new, exciting opportunity at the next level. Congrats, Natalie and best of luck with the remaining cross country season!

She has been one of the top distance runners and long-sprinters in the region over the past 6 years, and today we’re super-stoked to share the post of a young lady we’ve had to the pleasure to get to know in recent years, Brandon Valley standout, , and her commitment to continue her running career at Creighton University!

Every year, Addison only gets better…and faster, finishing last spring’s track season with PRs of 57.2 and 2:12 in the 400 and 800m, respectively. Currently in the midst of another outstanding cross-country season, next spring is going to be an exciting, for sure! Best of luck, Addison, and congratulations on your exciting announcement!

In one of the largest early-season cross-country meets in the region, it was a cool night, but the times were red hot! Last Friday’s annual Augie Twilight meet showcased a number of the upper Midwest’s top high school distance runners, and the electric atmosphere provided all the hype needed to surpass everyone’s expectations. Congratulations to all athletes, and especially those we’ve had the good fortune to work with in recent months.

On the girls side, .maddox (16:33), Hannah Genrich (16:44), Faith Wiese (17:08) and Sadie Pettengill (17:18) dominated the field and posted Top 8 finishes, while on the boy’s side, .p (14:26) and Miles Lechtenberg (14:32) charged to 2nd and 4th place, respectively. For all these athletes, their times have earned them Top 30 performances across the country in the 5K distance.

Additional Top 25 finishers for the girls included Mia Kadi (14th), (16th), Emery Larson (22nd), (23rd) and (25th), with (19th), Reid Groher (26th), .miller_ (27th) and Ethan Kyte (30th) securing Top 30 performances among the boys.

And still others having super-strong performances for the girls were Bailey VanderGriend (28th), Maxine Ordway (30th), Bryn Barker (34th), (53rd), Jayna VanLaecken (57th), Calla Wiese (59th) and Taylor Boehnke (379th).

Meanwhile, Riddick Iseminger (93rd), Isaac Koole (106th), Griffin Smith (110th), Sam Mischke (111th), Quinn Mischke (134th), (163rd), and Tate VanLaecken (250th) all placed among the Top 50% of finishers among the boys.

Again, congrats to all the outstanding performances at Augie Twilight. The coming weeks bring two more massive meets—the Heartland Preview (9/13) and Roy Griak Invitational (9/20), where many of these same runners will lace up their spikes and continue to work towards the late-October (9/25) state meet in Huron, SD. Good luck!

The high school cross-country season is well underway, but the college season is just heating up, with many area squads launching their 2025 campaigns this coming week!

And with that, we want to wish former Sioux Falls Christian standout—and current Dordt University Defender—Corinne Braun all the best as she looks to build on an incredible freshman year.

The 2023 South Dakota Class A State Cross-Country champion her senior year of high school, Corinne used that dedication and commitment as a springboard to an outstanding first year at the collegiate level.

In the 2024 cross-country season, she captured 1st place in six meets, was All-Conference, GPAC Champion, GPAC Runner of the Year, USTFCCCA Midwest Region Runner of the Year, and was a qualifier for the NAIA National Championship.

Meanwhile, on the track, Corinne had massive 2025 success as well, achieving NAIA All-American status in the 1000m and 4x800m relay during the indoor season; while the outdoor season brought being named GPAC All-Conference in the 1500m, GPAC Conference Champion in the 1500m, NAIA National Qualifier in the 800m and NAIA All-American in the 4x800m relay.

We’ve known Corinne since her earliest days in high school, and it has been a joy to see her running career continue to flourish. All the best this fall, Corinne!

They’ve been with us for years, and this fall they’ll both be at the same school once again as they head off to Dordt University. Today’s Off to School profile features siblings and former Sioux Falls Christian star athletes, and (as well as a cameo by another recently featured harrier from SFC, Jackson Prins)!

Graduating just this past spring, Levi capped the transition from distance to sprint events over his high school career and found enormous success in the open 100m and 200m, as well as the 4x100, 4x200, SMR and 4x400m, which included a 3rd leg PR split on that state-winning 2025 relay team.

Returning for his third collegiate season, older brother Isaac has only continued to add to his prolific high school running career, which culminated in his senior year with his defending both his 800 and 1600m open titles, as well as earning 1st place finishes as part of SFC’s 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. In college, after just two seasons, Isaac has further established himself as one of the premier long-sprinters and middle-distance runners in the country, having clocked 22 and 47 seconds in the 200m and 400m, respectively, while recording 1:17 and 1:51 in the 600m and 800m. Good for a 4th place finish at the 2025 Indoor Nationals, Isaac’s 600m performance earned him All-America honors, as did his contributions to his team’s 6th place in the 4x400m 2025 Indoor Nationals and 7th place in the 4x800m in the 2025 Outdoor Nationals.

Though we won’t be seeing you like we have these past couple of months, it has been great having you in this summer and we’ll be excited for both of you as fall track training kicks off. Best of luck at school, guys!

It’s another week of showcasing athletes who are Off to School, and today, we highlight Sioux Valley’s !

A fixture among South Dakota’s All-Time bests, Isabelle earned Class A state championships in cross-country as well in the 1600 and 3200 meters on the track. In addition to her exploits involving track spikes, Isabelle also notched 1000+ points on the basketball court as part of the Cossacks hoopsters.

For the past several years Isabelle has been an avid participant in a number of our on-going research studies involving high school distance runners; and it became obvious, straight away, that she was a real student of her sport—always interested in fine-tuning her running stride and asking questions about different training techniques and tactics.

Isabelle is off to the nationally regarded distance running powerhouse, University of New Mexico, where she’ll be able to train outdoors, year-round, as a Lobo. Best of luck, Isabelle, and we’ll be keeping an eye out for you!

He doesn’t officially report for fall training camp until the week of August 17, but today’s Off to School feature athlete is none other than recent Sioux Falls Christian standout, !

We’ve known Jackson since he entered high school, and to see how he emerged as one of the top distance runners in the state over his high school career has been absolutely fantastic. At last fall’s state cross-country meet, Jackson snared the 8th spot among stiff Class A competition, while during the spring track season he placed 5th and 4th, respectively, in the finals of the 1600 and 3200, while setting PRs at these distances along the way.

This fall Jackson heads off to perennial distance running powerhouse, Dordt University, where he’ll compete in both cross-country and track. Best of luck to you, Jackson—we’ve had fun times working with you and we’ll be following this next chapter of your running!
