Business card etiquette for the 21st Century

With the prospect of international business becoming increasingly common, knowing proper business card etiquette is an increasingly useful skill. The conventions below were originally developed in Asia and the Middle East but now are considered a global standard.

1. Use a dedicated business card holder. Putting a business card in a pocket is considered impolite and dismissive--not a good impression if dealing with someone you want to do business with.

2. When you present your business card, offer it either with your right hand or both hands. It is considered insulting to present or take a card with the left hand.

3. If the information on your card is in the language of the party you are presenting it to, score bonus points! Note: be very, very sure that your information has been correctly translated!

4. It is considered good form to read the card you just received and to find something to compliment.

5. When you receive a business card, place it in a business card holder and place it in a breast pocket. A business card is considered a representation of a person's face and putting it in a back pocket and sitting on it is considered a grave insult.
