🧠 Noteworthy Psychobiotics for emotional wellness…

Focusing on the gut-brain axis is a significant part of our practice…🧐🩺

Psychobiotics are specific probiotic strains shown to support emotional wellness by improving gut-brain communication, reducing inflammation, and even modulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and GABA.

✨ Top Psychobiotic Strains to Know:

• Lactobacillus rhamnosus (JB-1): Linked to reduced anxiety and improved stress resilience.

• Bifidobacterium longum (1714): Supports calm focus and lowers cortisol response.

• Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 + Bifidobacterium longum R0175: Studied together for improving mood and reducing psychological distress.

• Bifidobacterium breve CCFM1025: Emerging evidence suggests benefits for cognitive flexibility and emotional balance.

• Lactobacillus plantarum PS128: May enhance dopamine and serotonin activity, supporting motivation and mood.

💡 How to support your psychobiome:
• Eat a variety of fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut). 🥒🫜

• Feed your gut with prebiotics like garlic, onions, and resistant starch.🧅🧄🥔

• Manage stress — your gut feels it too.🧘

Your microbiome is more than digestion — it’s part of your emotional landscape. 🧠🍴

🧠✨ Rethinking Mental Health Through the Lens of Metabolism

Metabolic psychiatry is an increasingly emerging field that explores how our brain’s energy systems influence mood, cognition, and mental health. Rather than seeing mental illness only as a “chemical imbalance,” this approach considers how mitochondrial function, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, and nutrient metabolism play critical roles in brain function.

When metabolism is disrupted—through insulin resistance, oxidative stress, nutrient deficiencies, or inflammation—the brain may struggle to efficiently use energy. This can show up as depression, anxiety, brain fog, or even more severe psychiatric conditions.

💡 Key Insight:
The brain is an energy-hungry organ. When its fuel systems falter, mental health can suffer.

Metabolic psychiatry bridges neuroscience, nutrition, and psychiatry to support the brain’s metabolic needs—often through dietary strategies (like ketogenic or low-glycemic approaches), movement, sleep optimization, and reducing systemic inflammation.

This is not a “one-size-fits-all” model but a powerful paradigm shift that mental health & metabolism are intricately connected.

✨ Progesterone vs Progestin ✨

Key differences that are important to understand…

🌿 Progesterone (bioidentical) synthesize biologically, and available in bioidentical forms (micronized progesterone)

• Supports mood + sleep (enhances GABA)
• Protects brain + heart
• Calms inflammation
• Balances cycles naturally
• Neuroprotective
• Down-regulates estradiol alpha receptors= minimize the risk of over proliferation/tumor growth

⚠️ Progestin (synthetic), found in most contraceptives:
• Can increase risk of clotting + stroke
• Does not increase GABA=potential anxiety
• May blunt natural hormone rhythms
• May increase the risk of over proliferation/tumor growth

Progestins are found in most contraceptives and are effective at preventing pregnancy and for improving certain menstrual irregularities, however, progestins come with side effects and trade-offs that are important to be informed and aware of.

As always, be sure to talk with a licensed health professional before making any decisions😉
