OUTDOOR DEBRIS BURNING OPENS Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 12:00 a.m.

The Central Oregon Fire Chiefs’ Association (COFCA) works with local, state, and federal partners to determine when to collectively open debris burning in the fall. The twelve local fire agencies in Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson Counties met and agreed to collectively open debris burning on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 12:00 a.m.

Even with the joint decision to allow burning, each local fire protection agency has discretion to open or close it on a daily basis. Before burning, residents should check online or call their specific fire department to get current information, understand the regulations, and obtain the necessary permits if required. If burning across multiple days, residents should check online or call each morning before burning.

All Central Oregon fire departments and rural fire districts will continue to monitor weather and fuel moisture conditions in their district and because of localized variability may make modifications on a day-to-day basis.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

NORTHWEST FIRE AGENCIES IMPOSE RECREATIONAL BURNING CLOSURE TO HELP PREVENT SUMMER WILDFIRES

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Northwest Fire Agencies, including Sisters-Camp Sherman, Cloverdale and Black Butte Ranch, will impose a ban on all recreational burning, and follow the regulated-use closures imposed by the Oregon Department of Forestry and public use restrictions imposed by the Central Oregon Fire Management Services in the Central Oregon District to help prevent human-caused wildfires. This ban will be in effect for Northwest Fire Agencies until further notice, and includes all areas within the Black Butte Ranch, Cloverdale, and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Districts.

All open fires are prohibited, including campfires, charcoal fires, fires used for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth, or similar purposes. Not included in this burn ban are portable cooking stoves using liquefied or bottled fuels.

With multiple fire crews committed to the Flat Fire and Red-Flag conditions declared for much of the northwest, and hot temperatures extending into the next several weeks, firefighters will be busy responding to lightning-caused wildfires and patrolling for hot spots within the Flat Fire. Additional wildfires caused through carelessness or negligence create unnecessary risk to our firefighters, the land, natural resources, our visitors, and our neighboring private lands.

Residents are strongly encouraged to review the following information and maps of regulated closures and public use restrictions currently in place in Central Oregon:

Jefferson County: https://www.jeffco.net/media/23461

Residents and visitors can contact their local fire protection agencies for additional burning information and regulations. Northwest Fire Agencies will continue to monitor weather and fuel moisture conditions in their district and may make modifications on a day-to-day basis. Please call your local fire agency for more information. Black Butte Ranch Rural Fire Protection District: 541-595-2288, Cloverdale Rural Fire Protection District: 541-389-2345, Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District: 541-549-0771.

Deschutes County has enacted public use fire restrictions on all County-owned land and all unprotected land in the unincorporated areas of the county until mid-October. A map of the restricted areas can be viewed here.

As the Flat Fire continues to challenge our community, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the many agencies and individuals working tirelessly on the front lines and behind the scenes.

Local, state, and federal partners have come together with one common goal: to protect lives, property, and the land we call home. This collaboration is a true testament to the strength and resilience of our fire service family and the communities we serve.

From firefighters in the field, to support personnel, to law enforcement, dispatchers, public works, and emergency management teams—your dedication does not go unnoticed. The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s task forces and strike teams, local fire districts, and partner agencies have all stepped up to provide vital resources, expertise, and support.

We also want to recognize the tireless efforts of our own department members who answered the call to serve on this incident. They worked long hours in difficult conditions and have now officially returned home—we are proud of their dedication and sacrifice.

It is through this unified effort that we continue to make progress against the Flat Fire. On behalf of our community, thank you for your service, sacrifice, and commitment.
