Formed in partnership by Sitka Conservation Society with UAF Cooperative Extension, Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H has the goal of connecting youth to the natural environment of the Tongass through hands on experiential education and leadership opportunities. The University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service office in Sitka is planning several youth 4-H camps this summer, as well as some that are open to all. 4-H True Leaders: May 27-28, 1-6 p.m.; ages 7-12th grade. True Leaders is a training/camp for teens who are interested in becoming camp counselors and youth leaders at Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H camps. Free.

Muddy Buddies: June 1-5, 9 a.m.-noon; 5-8 year olds. Campers are encouraged to play in the mud while gardening, working on trails, making mud pies and playing mud ball, among other activities. $30.

SCS x SAIL 4-H Kayak Adventure Camp: June 8-11, 1-5 p.m.; ages 10 and older. Partnership between the Sitka Conservation Society’s 4-H Project and Southeast Alaska Independent Living. Participants will grow community, have fun, work together and learn safety skills while exploring Sitka Sound in kayaks. $30

Sitka Tuesday Bike Club: Six-week camp that meets 3-4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons beginning June 23; 4th grade and older. This is a biking program that helps youth become more confident in their biking skills and gives them a chance to learn in a fun environment. Free.

Cloverbuds Summer Harvest Days: June 29-30, 9 a.m.-noon; ages 5-8. Cloverbuds will harvest berries and seaweed for the Jr. Farmers Marketers to turn into products the following week. $10.

4-H Jr. Farmers Market: July 7-11, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.; ages 6th grade and older. Youth will develop food and art products using local ingredients from the forest and garden, and sell them at the farmers market. They will also get visits and tips from local vendors. $30.

Bikepacking: July 16, noon to 11 a.m. July 17; ages 6th grade and older. A fun overnight camp with a bike ride on the Sitka Cross Trail from Starrigavan. Activities include biking, setting up camp, cooking, sleeping (!) and possibly swimming or fishing. $35

4-H Splash Mountain Camp: July 20-24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; grades 6 and up. Youth will learn to safely recreate, harvest and live on the water and land through outdoor experiences with a focus on water and survival skills. Free.

4-H Art of Nature Camp: Aug. 3-7, 1-5 p.m.; ages K-5. This camp features a mash-up of art and environmental science that encourages creativity and science exploration. Taught by adults and teen leaders from Purdue University. $30.

4-H End of Summer Activity Days: Aug. 10, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. for grades 1-5; Aug. 11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; grades 6 and up. Daylong adventure with Sitka 4-H at the end of the summer. Location and details TBA. There are two age groups for this all-day camp; make sure you register for the correct one. $35.

Join the new Sitka Rimfire 4-H Shooting Project, a nine-week Introduction to rifle shooting.

Enroll in either the Friday classes beginning April 10 or the Sunday classes beginning April 12. Range location: Sitka Sportsman Association, 5211 Halibut Point Road. No experience needed. Open to youth ages 8 and up. Cost $40. Register at 4h.zsuite.org.

🍀As the new 4-H year is underway, this is a great time to learn more about becoming a 4-H volunteer, to brush up on your leader skills, or just to connect with other 4-H volunteers across the state!

🍀Did you know that her artwork was made into HUNDREDS of stickers that were shared all over Alaska and the United States?

🍀Did you know they were the perfect keepsake gifts for volunteers, alumni, visitors to 4-H offices across Alaska, and that they were shared with 4-H'ers from across the nation at national events as well as with our own very own AK Legislature in Juneau?

🍀Let's keep this fun thing going!

Enrollment for Sitka Spruce Tips 4-H Club for the 2025-26 year opens Wednesday, October 1 for all youth ages 5-18. An open house will be held at Blatchley Middle School MPR that evening from 5 - 7 pm. Staff will be available to assist in enrolling youth and provide information about exciting hands-on learning experiences for this upcoming year.

And in honor of Alaska 4-H Day, enrolled families are invited to skate. Snacks and skates provided.

Have a skill to share with 4-Hers or interested in getting involved? Join us next week for our volunteer potluck – you need not be a current volunteer to join.

Sitka 4-H is hosting a potluck for volunteers and those interested in volunteering on Wednesday, December 4th from 6pm to 8pm at the Pioneer's Manager Home dining room( below Braveheart). Learn about upcoming 4-H programming and how you can get involved, visit with other volunteers, and get assistance on 4-H volunteer onboarding. We are always looking for community members to share their skills and expertise with 4-Hers to connect them with their community and environment. Anyone interested in learning more about volunteering with 4-H are invited - you do not need to be a current volunteer. Contact Jasmine Shaw at jdshaw2@alaska.edu for more information.

4-H Family Skate Night was so fun!

For more skating, and if you missed our open house last week, come check out our table at the Lights On Afterschool event, happening Friday, October 11 from 4 - 7 pm at Blatchley Middle School.

Information on after school opportunities from a variety of different organizations, free open gym and skate, raffle prizes, art activities, and more are offered. And we can help register you for 4-H on the spot! :)

The club members, who sold arts and crafts, baked goods, and homemade preserves, was participating in the Sitka Farmers Market youth vendor program for those younger than 14. They received a certificate, a tote bag, a selection of Alaska Flour Company products, a bag of salad greens, some rhubarb, assorted stickers, and several Sitka Farmers Market special label chocolate bars. The next Sitka Farmers Market is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, at the Alaska Native Brotherhood Founders Hall (235 Katlian Street). Vendors can register online (by Thursday) at https://sitkafarmersmarket.eventsmart.com.
