Itโ€™s Shelter Sitka season again!

From now until December 31st, the Sitka Homeless Coalition is campaigning to raise funds and awareness for our efforts to support those without a home in Sitka!

This year, we are especially looking to increase support for our Emergency Shelter Program! This program will still be a necessity after we move 11 individuals into the Hรญtxโ€™i Sรกani Community. Any funds raised and any committed volunteers will greatly increase our ability to operate this program and how long we will be able to offer it this winter.

Please use the linktree in our bio to donate or learn more about how you can get involved!

At the October 28 Assembly meeting, the Assembly approved Sitkaโ€™s new Commercial Recreational Land Use Plan โ€” establishing updated guidelines for how outfitters and guides can operate on City-managed public lands.

This plan takes a much more comprehensive and balanced approach than what was previously in place, supporting economic opportunities for local businesses while preserving the outdoor spaces and experiences Sitkans value most.

Itโ€™s an important step forward โ€” and one that may be revisited. As the 2026 season unfolds, we look forward to hearing from residents, outfitters, and user groups about how the plan works in practice.

A huge thank you to our Parks & Recreation and Planning & Community Development Department staff, Sitka Trail Works, U.S. Forest Service, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, and Parks & Recreation Committee for the many hours of work and collaboration that went into developing this update

Safety Tips for Bikers and Pedestrians

1. To be safe, be seen: make yourself visible to drivers.
2. Be predictable. Ride in bike lanes or when allowed kids ride on sidewalks. Cross or enter streets where it is legal to do so.
3. Use lights and reflective materials, while wearing bright/light colored clothing. Lights provide the most visibility.
4. Be wary. Most drivers are nice people, but donโ€™t count on them paying attention. Watch out โ€“ make eye contact to be sure they see you!
5. Alcohol and drugs can impair your ability to bike and walk safely, just like they do a personโ€™s ability to drive.
6. Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars or other obstacles before crossing so drivers can see you.
7. Always walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing oncoming traffic.
8. Donโ€™t rely solely on pedestrian signals; look before you cross the road.
9. Look extra carefully if a driver is making a right turn. Drivers often only look at traffic coming from the left. Make eye contact before proceeding into an intersection. And how about smiling and waving too? Be safe and be kind.
