When people refuse to make meaning of injustice and human suffering, what they often mean is: we should not justify it, spiritualize it, or soften its violence. I agree.
But for people inside danger, meaning is not a luxury — it is a survival strategy:
Meaning organizes the nervous system.
It gives suffering a vector instead of leaving it as chaos.
It allows people to risk their lives without collapsing into despair.
The people of Iran do not walk into the streets thinking, “This is meaningless.” They walk because it means everything.
To refuse meaning and witness in the face of their resistance is not humility — it is a form of abandonment and erasure. It is a way of not witnessing — a way of staying untouched. A way of erasing the inner logic that makes courage possible. 🔗 link in bio for my substack
