The Athenaeum of Skaneateles

The Athenaeum of Skaneateles The Athenaeum of Skaneateles is a Senior Living Residence where elegance and compassion come together

Named for Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, The Athenaeum of Skaneateles is an intimate senior living community offering assisted living and memory care for your loved one. Known affectionately in the community as the “big yellow building up the hill,” The Athenaeum was once a large mansion that has been converted into single rooms for senior living, giving our building a homey feel and comfort

able atmosphere. By embracing The Peregrine Way®, The Athenaeum at Skaneateles provides a supportive environment for seniors and their families. We specialize in assisted living for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, encouraging them to lead full lives by continuing to grow mentally, spiritually and socially.

Comfort, connection, and convenience come together in the little details that make each day easier and more enjoyable.

From welcoming common spaces and beautifully prepared meals to engaging activity rooms and peaceful outdoor areas, our community is designed with residents’ well-being in mind.

It’s not just about where you live. It’s about how you live, and here, every space is created to feel like home.

Not only are we fortunate to be surrounded by such beauty as Skaneateles Lake and all of what CNY has to offer, but also the rich history of “this little lake town”. (Words from a song by Byron Lee).
Thank you to The Skaneateles Historical Society for the adapted tour during your renovations. Already planning our next visit.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded of the beauty and peace that nature brings into our lives. 🌎💚

Whether it’s a walk in the sunshine, tending to a garden, or simply enjoying fresh air with friends, these moments help us feel grounded and connected.

Caring for our environment and appreciating its gifts go hand in hand—and together, we can nurture a world that supports well-being for generations to come.

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month—a time to bring understanding, compassion, and visibility to those living with Parkinson’s and the families who support them.

We recognize that every journey is unique. Through personalized care, thoughtful engagement, and supportive environments, we help residents maintain dignity, independence, and connection.

By learning more and leading with empathy, we can create a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered, every step of the way.

A big thank you to The Kid’s Care Club at State Street Elementary School for wrapping up their year of good deeds in the community by hosting us for an afternoon of bingo, snacks and laughs. Intergenerational leisure pursuits are beneficial on so many levels, no matter how old or young we are.
Take a moment today, to connect with a neighbor, friend or loved one who you have years between and say hello. It’s good for the soul.

Fun Friday Shenanigans with Moby and Sugar, a highland cow and miniature pony from Chester’s Barn, a 501c3 non profit animal sanctuary in Scipio Center, NY.
Among other things, Chester’s Barn has a therapy visitation program. “Animals make a difference in people’s lives”. We learned that the average internal body temperature of a highland cow is 102 degrees and a slower heart rate then humans, which makes them naturally soothing to be around.
Sugar, the pony, grew up inside and shows interest in watching television. She is potty trained and part of the family.
Join in the efforts in supporting Chester’s Barn and their mission by visiting Prison City North on June 7th 12pm-6pm. Details in the photos below.
We are grateful for their visit to The Athenaeum.

We believe that human connection is essential to well-being—at every age. Friendship, laughter, and shared experiences not only lift the spirit, but also support cognitive health, emotional balance, and overall happiness.

That’s why each day in our communities is filled with opportunities to connect—over a meal with neighbors, during a morning fitness class, at a creative art session, or simply through a heartfelt conversation in the garden.

Our goal is simple: to nurture a sense of belonging where everyone feels seen, valued, and part of something meaningful. Because when we stay connected, we thrive together.

As we reflect back on our weekend at The Athenaeum, I decided to research Easter Monday, as many of you will see it on your calendars today.
Food for thought…while Easter Monday is not directly detailed in the Bible, it serves as a continuation of the Easter celebration. In Western Christianity, it is part of the “Octave of Easter,” an 8-day celebration. Other names include Bright Monday, Renewal Monday, Wet Monday, and Little Easter.
Regardless of what today means to you, we hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend with the ones you love.
