Bringing sunshine to the Koenig Center! This weekend, Board Member, Connie Vuong spent hours painting this beautiful mural on the wall leading into the client lunch/multi-purpose room, which is home to the True North-Find Your Path Program. This morning, everyone was in awe seeing the mural including l. to r. Roxanne, Hepolito, Allen, Candace and Anu. Thank you Connie for doing this. It will brighten the spirits of everyone who sees it!

Would you like to join Shore's Board of Directors? Members of the Board are important partners in our mission. Ideal candidates are deeply engaged in their communities, willing to network and share resources, and have a passion for full inclusion of people with disabilities in public life.

Board members serve as ambassadors for Shore in their professional and personal networks, and help to leverage resources for those we serve and employ. A personal connection to intellectual and developmental disabilities is not required, but is valued.

All professional skills are needed, in particular marketing, human resources, and finance.

Members should expect to be involved in fundraising (i.e. attending events and inviting others, personal giving and asks of others) as well as a time commitment of approximately 10 hours/month.

If interested, please fill out the form https://forms.gle/MeZ3jTiVKHvvm5tbA.

75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

This week’s chapter features the summer play school, which operated for many years at Leahy Park in Evanston. In 1959 students celebrated the end of the summer with a play about Father Time and the months of the year. Keeping with the theme, younger children recited nursery rhymes, and the older children participated in a square dance for the final part of the performance.

The play school and Shore school operated at a time when special education was not available in public schools. Raising awareness and support helped the public understand that children with developmental disabilities are capable - and worthy - of learning.

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)
