75 Years - One Brilliant Story

Throughout our anniversary year, we’ll be highlighting important “chapters” of this story that make up the rich history and legacy of Shore Community Services, and our community’s commitment to inclusion over 75 years!

This week’s chapter features The Lakewood League of Evanston, which was formed in April 1960 as a member of the Illinois Federation of Women’s Clubs. Members were residents of the North Shore suburbs, who met monthly to plan social and philanthropic events.

The Lakewood League became an auxiliary of the North Shore Association for R* Children (now Shore) in 1963, and continued to support our work over the next two decades, including one creative cocktail party where husbands of the members were weighed at the door and charged a “penny a pound” for admission, raising money for Shore’s programs.

Thank you to The Lakewood League for being part of our brilliant story!

(*Shore removed the r-word from its name in 1987, because it evolved from a clinical diagnosis into a dehumanizing slur. Replacing it with person-first language like "intellectual disability" ensures dignity and respect for everyone.)

Welcome Northside Learning Center! Students, parents and teachers toured the Koenig Training Center as the students will be transitioning out of school in the spring. Liliana Zarnowiecki, Community Employment Manager, led an interactive discussion on employment so the students could get a sample of the Ready For Work training that is offered.

Thank you for visiting and we hope to see some of the students utilize our services in the future!

If you would like to schedule a tour please contact Anni Braverman at abraverman@shoreservices.org.
