Early on during my medical training I was carrying cancer cells in a petri dish from one lab to another, just a 5-minute walk down the hall. The graduate student in the second lab was quite agitated with me, yelling for me to move faster, because the cells died during this short walk, preventing him from doing his lab work.

While racing back to get yet another batch of malignant cells, I found myself struck by the disconnect between the fearsome reputation of these cells and their astonishing vulnerability. Over the past four-plus decades, Dr. Block has cared for numerous cancer patients who were told at the time of their diagnosis that they had only three to six months to live. And yet, years later, many of these same individuals are alive and doing quite well. As he told them when they first came to our Center for treatment, “forget all the talk of survival statistics. A cancer diagnosis is terrifying and life changing. As Dr. Block writes in Life Over Cancer, “‘you have cancer’ are three of the most dreaded words you can hear.” For many patients, as they begin the process of becoming “a cancer patient,” the fear of chemotherapy becomes all too real. In fact, many patients report that their fear of treatment is greater than the fear of the disease itself. This has prompted many patients to question if the use of chemotherapy is still justified.
