When we feel anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected, our nervous system may be operating in survival mode, which focuses on potential threats rather than present-moment safety.
An orienting practice, commonly used in Somatic Experiencing therapy, helps the nervous system recognize that right now, in this moment, you are safe enough.
This practice is not about "calming yourself down" or changing how you feel. It’s about bringing awareness to your environment and allowing your body to update from past threat to present safety.
Try this exercise for regulation (3–5 minutes):
• Slowly look around the room
• Name 3 things you can see
• Notice 1 neutral or pleasant sensation in your body
• Take one slow, natural breath
This practice can support grounding, reduce anxiety, and increase a sense of stability, especially during moments of stress or emotional intensity.
