Tics are sudden, rapid, and repetitive movements or vocalizations that are involuntary. Tourette disorder is a neurological condition marked by both motor and vocal tics that persist for more than a year.

Tics are often misunderstood—even by well-meaning adults. They’re not deliberate. Kids may be able to suppress them briefly, but it’s uncomfortable and difficult - like trying to hold in a cough or sneeze. Responding with punishment or criticism can actually make things worse.

I recently gave a professional development talk on Tourette disorder at a local school district, and one of the main takeaways was that the tics themselves are often not the biggest issue. Kids with Tourette frequently struggle more with co-occurring challenges like ADHD, OCD, or anxiety—and that’s where they need the most support.

When schools and families respond with understanding instead of consequences, it can make a huge difference for kids with Tourette and co-occurring challenges.

In case you're not aware I thought I would share this:

Seventeen state attorneys general (led by Texas) have filed a lawsuit against the federal government, challenging the inclusion of gender dysphoria under Section 504. They claim they are only contesting this specific inclusion, but the lawsuit actually challenges the federal government’s authority to define what qualifies as a disability.

If they win, each state—not the federal government—would get to decide what counts as a disability. This would undermine the entire purpose of Section 504, which exists to provide consistent civil rights protections nationwide for people with disabilities.

What can you do?
📢 If you live in one of the 17 states involved in the lawsuit, contact your state attorney general and let them know you oppose this attack on federal disability protections. Also, reach out to your state representatives and members of Congress to urge them to speak out against this case.
📢 If you're in another state, contact your U.S. Senators and House Representatives to tell them you support strong, nationwide disability protections and want them to take a stand in defense of Section 504.

💡 Disability rights should not be left up to individual states—civil rights protections must remain federal. Let’s make sure Section 504 stays intact.

Parents, we need your input! 📢

We have recently run some telehealth groups to help parents support their children's executive function skills and to guide parents of students who avoid school. These groups have been very successful, and we've enjoyed working with families to address these needs. We’d like to continue offering parent telehealth groups and are considering adding daytime sessions, but we're unsure about the level of interest. Would you be interested in this? Would you be available during the day, maybe lunchtime?

This blog entry explains what three-cueing is, why it makes no sense to teach it, but also why policy efforts aimed at banning it are problematic, too.
