SECU Hospice House A PLACE OF COMPASSION, COMFORT AND DIGNITY

There’s a good chance that someone you know will need end-of-life care.

And if that someone is a loved one such as a parent or spouse, then you know how difficult it can be to make decisions, especially when you’re feeling distressed or overwhelmed. Hospice care focuses on palliative rather than curative treatments. Our goal is to reduce pain and suffering while helping the patient to live as fully as possible. The strain of caring for a loved one can be more than fam

ily caregivers can handle. That’s when a hospice inpatient center like the SECU Hospice House can assist. The SECU Hospice House opened in June of 2010 and is an 18-bed hospice care center for the terminally ill. It is located on Hospital Road a short distance from Johnston Health and is named for the State Employees Credit Union. We strive to make each patient’s stay as comfortable as possible for them and their families.

Supporting our community's youngest hearts through grief 💙

We’re proud to offer Camp Courage annually to provide a safe space for children ages 6-17 to process grief and connect with others who understand their journey.

Grief doesn't have an age limit, and neither does our commitment to caring for those who need support most.

Camp Courage at UNC Health Johnston is designed to help kids navigate grief after losing a loved one 💙

While at Camp Courage, campers have opportunities to:

✔️ Identity and express feelings

Moments of Heart and Honor ❤️🇺🇸

Last week, a We Honor Veterans ceremony for our patient, Rolf Maris, became even more meaningful when his newborn great-grandson arrived as a surprise special guest. It was a touching moment filled with honor, gratitude and love.

Led by our devoted veteran volunteers, this special ceremony pays tribute to the veterans in our care. Staff present a personalized certificate recognizing their military service, and a U.S. flag, along with a flag representing their branch, is displayed outside the patient’s room. Each veteran is also gifted a red, white, and blue prayer shawl, crocheted by local volunteers.

Friends and family are invited to join in singing “America the Beautiful.” During this particular ceremony, Mr. Maris shared that he had once visited Pike’s Peak with his wife, Becky, the very place where the song was written.

This is one of the many ways our team goes above and beyond to surround patients and their families with dignity, connection, and care. Because it’s never too late to honor a life or create moments that truly matter.

Our incredible volunteers, Braden and Laura, bring so much warmth and heart to the SECU Hospice House. Laura shares her musical talents with patients and families, creating peaceful, meaningful moments that feel just like home. It’s dedicated volunteers like these who help us provide the comfort, compassion, and connection that truly matter.

If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, we’d love to welcome you to our hospice family. Our volunteers help create moments of grace and kindness every single day.

Meet Dr. Leslie Byrd Dupree! 🌟

Leslie’s journey with UNC Health Johnston began in 2010 when she worked as a CNA while in college. Since then, she has earned her RN, BSN, MSN, and most recently, her Doctor of Nursing Practice from ECU—bringing her full circle to care for the community she’s always called home.

Now serving as a medical provider in Johnston County, Leslie was inspired to join the hospice team after her grandfather received compassionate care at the SECU Hospice House in 2015.

When she’s not providing comfort and dignity to patients and families, you’ll find her serving at church, traveling the world, or enjoying precious time with her loved ones.

Thank you to Johnston Community Church for your incredible monthly ministry at the SECU Hospice House. Your commitment to serving patients, families, and staff with comforting meals and even sweet treats from Butter’s Cool Spot Ice Cream and Ol’ Fashioned Treats is a true reflection of loving your neighbors.

We're especially touched to learn that this beautiful tradition was inspired by Ms. Alice Hartley, whose passion for serving others and bringing meals to those in need continues to live on through your generous hearts. What a wonderful way to honor her memory while blessing so many families during difficult times.

Retired special education teacher Kathy Rice of Smithfield has created a beautiful community memorial quilt for SECU Hospice House, transforming fabric swatches contributed by families into a meaningful work of art.

With help from her 10-year-old granddaughter Gabbi, who organized the patient names and matching key, the quilt was dedicated last month during the Community Memorial Service. "Making the quilt is my way of giving back," said Rice, who has been quilting since her 2014 retirement and deeply respects hospice care after her own parents received these services.

This Memorial Day, we reflect on the profound meaning of service, sacrifice, and honor as we remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

At the SECU Hospice House, we're privileged to care for veterans and their families during life's most sacred moments. Our Veterans Memorial area provides a peaceful place of reflection and remembrance for those who served our country.

Today, we honor their legacy through compassionate care and remembrance. 🇺🇸

We asked—and you delivered!

Thank you to everyone who generously donated to our family pantry over the past two weeks. What may have seemed like a small act of kindness is making a meaningful difference in the daily lives of residents and families at the SECU Hospice House.

Thanks to your incredible response, our pantry is now fully stocked! At this time, we are not accepting additional donations. Please stay tuned for future opportunities to support our hospice patients and their families.

We are so grateful for our community champions—thank you for your continued kindness and support. Just like before, share this post to spread the word with your friends and family. 💙
