Flea allergies and seasonal allergies are two of the most common reasons our pets end up itchy, uncomfortable, and just not themselvesāand sometimes they can even happen at the same time.
Flea allergies are caused by a reaction to flea saliva, and it only takes one bite to trigger intense itching. You might see fleas, especially around the ears, neck, or base of the tail⦠or you may only notice tiny black specks (flea dirt). Pets often scratch, chew, and lick nonstop, which can lead to hair loss, irritated skin, and even painful hot spots or infections.
Seasonal allergies, on the other hand, come from things in your petās environmentālike pollen, dust, grass, and weeds. About 10ā15% of pets deal with this. You may notice paw licking, face rubbing, or biting at areas like the tummy, groin, and armpits. These can also lead to red, inflamed skin and hot spots.
The tricky part? Both types of allergies can look very similar, and identifying the exact cause isnāt always easy. Thatās why a vet visit can really help, especially for environmental allergies, where testing and targeted treatments may be recommended.
The good newsāthis isnāt a reflection of how well you care for your pet. These things happen! The key is staying proactive: keep your pet clean, use natural flea & tick protection, and maintain a clean environment by washing bedding and vacuuming regularly.
