Samuel H. Duck

Celebrating the Life of Samuel H. Duck

On Saturday, March 28, 2026, God called home one of His faithful servants, Samuel H. Duck, a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Sam was born on August 19, 1939, in Walters, Virginia, to the late Robert L. and Colia Carr Duck. He was the tenth of twelve children and grew up surrounded by love, faith, and family.

At an early age, Sam gave his life to Christ and became a devoted member of Chapel Grove United Church of Christ, where he remained faithful throughout his life. He served the Lord with joy and humility, holding many positions in the church, including Primary Class Teacher, Assistant Superintendent, Trustee for 20 years, and President of the Senior Choir for two decades. His voice and presence in the choir inspired generations, and his dedication to God and the church family never wavered.

Sam received his education in Isle of Wight County, attending Old Sugar Hill School, Georgie Tyler Elementary, and graduating as part of the first class of Georgie Tyler High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army, proudly serving his country and received a good conduct medal. He later began a long and fulfilling career with Newport News Shipbuilding, dedicating 38 and a half years of service before retiring. Even after retirement, Sam continued serving his community as a Bus Aide for Isle of Wight County Schools, where he was known for his kindness and gentle spirit.

On June 13, 1964, Sam married his longtime sweetheart, Lois Warren. Together they were blessed with two children, Carla Lynette Duck and Sandy Lamont Duck. His family grew to include his daughter-in-law, Lisa Moore Duck, and his beloved grandson, Nathaniel Lamont Duck. Sam was a devoted husband, loving father, and proud grandfather.

Sam found joy in simple things: restoring old vehicles, spending time with loved ones, and lending a helping hand wherever one was needed. His faith guided every step of his journey, and his life was a true reflection of God’s love in action.

Though Sam may no longer walk among us, the memory of his kindness, devotion, and quiet strength will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of faith, service, and love will remain a beacon to his family, church, and community for years to come.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Lois Duck; his loving daughter, Carla Duck; his son, Sandy (Lisa) Duck; and his beloved grandson, Nathaniel Lamont Duck. He is also survived by his sister, Betty-Anne (Heywood) Ashburn; sisters-in-law, Audrey Duck, Louise Duck, Gracy Duck, and Lorraine Duck; and a host of nieces, nephews, and godchildren. Sam also treasured the lifelong friendship of Bruce Johnson, Johnny Langston, and Robert Eley, who remained close to him throughout his life.

God saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb, so He gently closed his weary eyes and whispered, ‘Peace be thine.’ Now resting in the promise of eternal life.

On Friday, April 10, 2026, viewing will take place from 3-6 pm at Shivers Funeral Chapel. At 11:30 am on Saturday, April 11, 2026, a Celebration of Life will be held at Chapel Grove U.C.C. Please keep the Duck family in your thoughts and prayers.
