I’ve had a lot of parents lately asking questions about raising their children bilingually, or discontinuing teaching a language when their kiddos struggles in one of the languages! Giving your child another language is a gift! Persist teaching both languages if it helps them effectively interact in their social and cultural circles! I had taken in depth courses on child development and I knew all of the norms, but I remember being the the middle of parenting little children and thinking, “is this normal?” ASHA is the national organization that certifies speech-language pathologists and they have some very helpful lists of what you should expect at certain ages, as well as what you can do about it! If you have concerns about your child don’t hesitate to contact us!

Children develop at their own rate. Your child might not have all skills until the end of the age range.

Though it looks and feels a whole lot like play, we get a whole lot of work in too. The kiddos and parents I work with are the, hands-down, BEST!!!! If you find that your kiddos might be struggling with a few things on these milestone checklists consider calling to make sure they don’t get behind! We are a local, private practice business with fully licensed and credentialed Speech-Language pathologists. We have therapists that specialize in speech sound disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, and stuttering. We provide in-person, telepractice, or home visit sessions based on need and have availability starting January 3rd!

Here's a checklist of milestones to look for to determine if your kiddo might be at risk of a communication delay. If there are items on this list that your kiddo isn't doing, please consider getting their speech/language screened. Early intervention is KEY! Have you ever heard of the “Mathew Effect”? Here’s a graph to show the concept, but this concept is at work with children who are behind in communication and have difficulty producing speech sounds. Children who have difficulty learning speech sounds are at risk of it negatively impacting their literacy. Then, once they are behind, even if they start learning at the same rate as their peers, could be behind throughout the school years. Early intervention for children’s communication, and even speech sounds, is essential!!!
