TRILLIUM: The sacred female herb.

I'm so excited! Our trillium transplant last year was a huge success! I fought poison ivy, English ivy and a thunderstorm to get these before my uncle sold my grandmother's house and she would love that we have them now. My sister had a PERFECT spot on her property in the shade, by a creek and sheltered by a fence and large rocks to protect them from the deer. I used magnesium Epsom salt to help with transplant shock (as I do everything) and transplanted during the waning moon to help the roots establish. We may thin them out later, but for now I'm excited to collect the seeds of this semi-endangered wildflower and spread them all around!

Trillium is also known as the Birth Root, as historically the root was used by midwives to stop postpartum bleeding, lighten heavy menstrual cycles and aid in menopause. It can also be used to help bleeding in gastrointestinal and lung disease. Although, other herbs (such as yarrow) are suggested for use due to its "at risk" category. I made a tincture during our transplant from the broken pieces, and it does work very well for heavy menstrual cycles.

If you come across a patch, check your state laws as to if the root can be harvested. To ethnically harvest, only take what you need from larger patches after the flower has bloomed and produced seed. Trillium flowers should NEVER be picked as they need their foliage to die back naturally to regrow the next year. This is partly why they are at risk because the over population of deer eat them, and it can take up to 7 years for the plant to flower and develop seeds.

How does nettle leaf help allergies?

Nettle or stinging nettle is another one of those “weeds” that has much to offer. Due to its high contents of iron, silicon, Vitamin K and potassium, nettle leaf tea (or infusion) is very nourishing. Nettle leaf also contains quercetin which helps alleviate allergy symptoms. Quercetin is an antioxidant that helps slow the body’s release of histamines. Histamines cause allergy symptoms in our body and our body usually releases them when in contact with an allergen (like that lovely pollen floating in the air). The quercetin in nettle leaf slows the release of histamines while fighting inflammation, making it an ideal natural contender in the anti-allergy market.

I drink nettle tea to combat responses I have from food that is inflammatory. However mostly I drink nettle tea to enjoy it's many health benefits and nutrition. It’s a staple in my medicine cabinet – whether for cold or inflammation - and in my tea cabinet and daily vitamin tea. As always, do your research and you can talk to your doctor before taking something new.

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) is a superb anti-cancer and cancer-preventative herb.
🌱
Since it is primarily grown to feed to pregnant and lactating cows, I consider it safe for everyone. I think of it as the herb of fertility; and I rely on it exclusively when students want help with conceiving. An infusion (not tea, not tincture, not capsules) of red clover blossoms, leaves, and stems is not only very high in protein, macro- and trace-minerals, and vitamins (except B12), it is an excellent source of phytosterols. Phytosterols are hormone-like substances found in many plants that can be bio-converted in the human gut into active anti-cancer estrogens and other helpful anti-stress hormones. Calling phytosterols phytoestrogens is confusing, as it implies harmful, not protective, effects.

One of the most cherished of the fertility-increasing plants is red clover (Trifolium pratense). Common in fields and along roadsides, it has bright pink (not really red) blossoms from mid-summer into the chilly days of fall. A favorite flower of the honeybees, the tops (blossoms and appending leaves) are harvested on bright sunny days and eaten as is, or dried for medicinal use. The raw blossoms are delicious in salads and nutritious when cooked with grains such as rice or millet.

To make a fertility-enhancing infusion, I take one ounce by weight of the dried blossoms (fresh won't work for this application) and put them in a quart size canning jar. I fill the jar with boiling water, screw on a tight lid, and let it steep at room temperature overnight (or for at least four hours). Dozens of women have told me that they had successful pregnancies after drinking a cup or more (up to four cups) a day of red clover infusion.

It is especially helpful if there is scarring of the fallopian tubes, irregular me**es, abnormal cells in the reproductive tract, or "unexplained" infertility. It may take several months for the full effect of this herb to come on and pregnancy may not occurs until you have used it for a year or two. You can improve the taste by including some dried peppermint (a spoonful or two) along with the dried clover blossoms when making your infusion.

About Sacred Path Herbal

I love engaging with plants, whether it’s growing herbs, preparing healthy herbal goodies, or caring for my little piece of Tennessee land. I continue to study all things herbal as I have for the past decade. Attending conferences and learning from herbal mentors only strengthens my love of herbs and the bountiful healing properties they embody. I adore helping folks discover the healing qualities of the plants in their own backyards. By learning more about nature and all its wonders, I believe we start to connect with the world around us, and magically become more whole.
