🌍❤️ World AIDS Day | December 1 ❤️🌍

December 1st marks World AIDS Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). While much of the focus is often on the overall health implications of AIDS, there’s an important — and often overlooked — connection between AIDS and eye health.

🧠 AIDS and the Immune System
AIDS is caused by the HIV virus, which attacks the body’s immune system by targeting CD4 (T) cells. As the immune system weakens, the body becomes more vulnerable to infections — including those that affect the eyes.

👁️ Eye Problems Associated with AIDS
People living with AIDS may experience a range of eye conditions, such as:
1️⃣ CMV Retinitis – inflammation of the retina that can lead to blindness
2️⃣ Kaposi’s Sarcoma – cancerous lesions that may appear in or around the eyes
3️⃣ Toxoplasmosis – parasitic infection that can damage the retina
4️⃣ Cataracts – clouding of the lens causing vision loss
5️⃣ Dry Eye Syndrome – often linked to antiretroviral therapy (ART)

Early detection through comprehensive eye exams is vital. Opticians and eye care professionals play a critical role in identifying these issues early and helping patients maintain both their vision and their overall health.

Let’s use today to raise awareness, show compassion, and continue the fight against HIV/AIDS — in every aspect of health.

https://wix.to/Wpc65ruNovember is National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month.

Did you know that diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss among adults? The good news — early detection and regular eye exams can help protect sight.

Opticians play an important role in helping patients understand the connection between diabetes and eye health. By encouraging regular comprehensive eye exams and awareness of changes in vision, we can make a real difference.

This month — and every month — let’s help our communities see the importance of preventive care. 👓
