Yesterday our president John Shaw, and board member Michelle Cereo went to Harrisburg to meet with Pennsylvania Optometric Association and representative Guzman to discuss house bill 2386. We had a great discussion and look forward to continuing discussions and working towards certification for opticians in PA. If you have any questions about the bill or would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to reach out. We will also be holding another public meeting soon to talk about additional changes and next steps.

Pennsylvania deserves better vision care—and it starts with supporting HB 2386.

This bill, known as the Optician Certification and Consumer Vision Protection Act, will establish a State Board of Opticianry and require certification for those providing optical care. That means higher standards, better training, and stronger protection for patients across our state.

Opticians are healthcare professionals who interpret prescriptions, fit eyewear, and ensure patients see clearly and safely. Requiring certification isn’t just about our profession—it’s about patient safety, accountability, and quality care.

Right now, HB 2386 has been introduced and referred to committee, and your voice matters more than ever.
