🌿 First let’s talk about why marriages fail. As I have sat with hundreds of couples doing marriage intensives at Hope Restored and at private practice, there is one thing that always pops up: we look for the other person to heal us and we also only want the other person to change. I fall into the many wives and husbands who think that I am working on myself therefore my spouse should ________________.

🌿 My dear newlyweds, almost weds, and many-years-weds; your spouse should do nothing. You are not his condemner, his convictor, his savior, or his healer. Trust me when I say that there is a sense of unrighteous pride when we start thinking that if the other person changed then life would be better. It puts you in a victim mentality. It puts you in a helpless and powerless position of hopelessness because the more you try to control the marriage, the more you will feel disconnected. I want to help you see some common signs of what that looks like.

🌿 Head to our blog for the rest of Mayra's thoughts!

“I, Mayra, take you, Gavin, to be my beloved husband in all things that come. In times of birth and in times of death; when we hurt and when we heal; in times of waiting and in times of fulfillment; as we build and as we tear down; as we change and as we grow; in times of war and in times of peace...

🙏 God is not distant in our pain. He is near, attentive, and ready to strengthen us when we call. You don’t have to carry it alone.

“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:17–18

🌿 Meet Shelley Collier, Licensed Professional Counselor! She accepts Cigna, Aetna, and Carelon insurance. Shelley is guided by a trauma-informed perspective, exploring beliefs, thoughts, and emotions that shape our choices. Her counseling approach is rooted in a profound desire to unearth compassion within the narrative of each individual.

Understanding that we all navigate brokenness in need of healing, Shelley recognizes how self-judgment can obscure our ability to see where love and insight are most necessary. Within the therapeutic space, emotions and thoughts find a safe haven, allowing us to uncover the underlying causes of the challenges in our lives.

🌿 Adolescence is often a chaotic time where, as both a teen and a parent, you’re getting thrown into the deep end. This is true now more than ever with teens and parents having to navigate a pandemic. There has been a change in school situations and a shift in the way that teens interact with each other. All of that is on top of handing the world through technology and social media.

🌿 What I hear from parents so often is that they feel out of control and worry that their kids are getting the wrong messages from the internet and peers. On the other hand, what I hear from teens is they feel misunderstood and unheard. If you can imagine, teens that feel unheard plus parents who are afraid of the messages their kids are getting can sometimes lead to some tension, more fear, and less feeling heard. 🌿 What words or emotions come to mind when you think of the word “conflict”? If you are trying to learn how to manage conflict in a healthy way, our Atlanta therapists would love to help.

🌿 Here are some possibilities: argument, war, anger, frustration, problem, fight, disagreement, tension, struggle, difference. These all have negative connotations, but they also have different degrees of discouragement associated with them. Conflict does not always mean a fight or an argument but can also mean frustration and tension between two people (even when no words have been spoken about a problem).

💭 Music is the universal language that speaks to us in special ways. It moves us, soothes us, brings a smile to our faces, or a tear to our eyes. It’s so powerful that people have been studying the possible benefits of music in our lives – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Head to our Remain Connected Counseling website to read Rebecca's thoughts on music & mental health!
