It’s amazing to watch our children grow up…achieving exciting milestones such as their first steps or successfully becoming potty trained. And as much as we want to encourage a certain level of independence, there are some things that they need help and supervision with.

😬 Surprisingly brushing their teeth is one of those things! Often we see children who have been brushing their teeth all by themselves, and they usually can’t wait to tell us. However, the mouth tells a different story.

🦷 Due to the lack of fine motor skills children under 8 often miss brushing important areas such as where the gums meet the teeth, backside of front bottom teeth, and the back teeth in general.

🦠 This can lead to a build up of plaque and the potential for cavities to form.

Therefore, it’s important to help them brush all sides of the teeth for a minimum of 2 minutes.

🎶 So get out their favorite tunes and make dental hygiene fun!

ANSWERS BELOW📌

But before you look, were you able to figure out which were cavity causing culprits?

I bet you did! 🤩

Let’s dive in⬇️

🥣 While Cocoa Puffs and other popular cereal brands might taste great, many have a ton of added sugar.

🦠Fruit snacks and any gummy like candies, even vitamins (yes vitamins!!!) literally stick to your teeth, creating an easy environment for sugar bugs and plaque thrive.

😱Potato chips are starchy and eventually that starch becomes sugar that then gets trapped on and between teeth.

🥤Energy drinks, while created with good intentions, they are highly acidic and erode the tooth’s enamel…not to mention the health dangers of synthetic dyes which are derivatives of petroleum, a crude oil product 🤮

Not only do these highly processed foods affect our oral health they play a detrimental role in our overall health.

💪🏿💪🏾💪🏽💪🏼💪🏻

Beyond the surface of raising children with beautiful smiles, helping them build health conscious dietary habits full of nutrient rich foods that fuel their bodies is the real flex.

✨So when in doubt opt for whole foods such as veggies, fruits, nuts, and unrefined oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as olive oil. Plus water is your best friend!!!

Meet Dana, one of our three amazing dental hygienists! She brings 32 years of experience to PDAV and we couldn’t be happier to have her. Over her years of practice she has witnessed dentistry evolve. She is most excited about the preventative measures that are now in place such as the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride, a topical medication that allows for more conservative treatment.

🔥 Hot takeaway for patients and parents…

👄 If you notice any bumps or spots that do not resolve within 2 weeks, make an appointment with your child’s dentist immediately.

🦠 These bumps and spots can be indicative of a much more serious bacterial infection that can destroy the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

🪥 Several uncontrollable factors such as certain genes, autoimmune diseases, can negatively impact your child’s overall oral health.

However, like with all things in life it is important to focus on what you can control.

🍉 Provide your child with whole, nutrient rich foods.
💧 Drink water after eating to help wash away food particles.
🪥 Brush and floss twice a day.
👃 Encourage nostril breathing as mouth breathing can dry out the gums and teeth.

Ever wonder what happens to your plastic toothbrush after you replace it every 3-4 months?

Like most things it ends up in a landfill...which is bad for our environment. Especially considering that landfills are leading cause of microplastics that are then transported by air and leachate (aka water).

YIKES!!!

So this might be your sign to make the switch to more eco-conscious dental products.

Small changes can make a big impact!

Try these eco-friendly dental habits to keep your smile bright while caring for the planet:

🌿 Switch to a bamboo toothbrush – A biodegradable alternative to plastic!

♻️ Use biodegradable floss made out of silk or bamboo – Kinder to your teeth and the environment.

🧼 Try zero waste toothpaste – Natural ingredients, no harsh chemicals!

Sustainable smiles start with simple choices!

Sugary treats taste great but they literally eat away at our teeth and wreak havoc on our overall health.

Tip: If you can’t brush or floss right away, drink water! Water helps to rinse the mouth, diminishing the amount of sugar bugs on your beautiful teeth.
