Dear President Trump,
On behalf of independent pharmacy owners all over this great country, I am asking you to please look into the problem of Pharmacy Buying Managers or PBM’s. Basically they are an insidious price-fixing middleman that extracts exorbitant fees from the independent pharmacy owners without adding any value for the patient. PBMs have financial incentives that contribute to growth in drug prices, higher patient out-of-pocket costs, and the closing of independent pharmacies in rural, suburban and low-income neighborhoods.
These incentives are rooted in the vertical and horizontal consolidation that the PBM sector has undergone in recent years. For example, a PBM can charge insurers a higher amount for a given drug than what the PBM actually reimburses the pharmacy — a practice known as “spread pricing.” PBMs also commonly steer patients to the pharmacies it owns and under-reimburse smaller, independent pharmacies.
The 3 largest PBM’s are CVS Health, owned by CVS (with a 21.3% market share), followed by OptumRx owned by United Health Group(20.8%) and Express Scripts owned by Signa Health (17.1%). Their goals greatly conflict with the practice of independent pharmacy and cost patients Billions of Dollars!
Mr. President, just as you are doing with other areas of government, we implore you to take a closer look at this insidious, Price-Fixing Middleman Industry known as PBM's to help Make America Healthy Again.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Regards,
