It’s been 34 years since 70-year-old Jimmy Mauldin from Fayetteville had his heart transplant. That’s nearly a survivorship record for Georgia! Thanks to high-quality follow-up care from Dr. Arun Krishnamoorthy at the Samsky Advanced Heart Failure Clinic, Jimmy enjoyed a family camping trip to West Point Lake to mark the milestone this summer.

Did you know Piedmont is among the top five centers in the country for performing heart transplants? Last year, over 100 people got new hearts at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital.

Cheers to many more years of fishing, Jimmy!

Piedmont Eastside is honoring Officer Preston Marsh with the Duluth Police Department for his heroic actions while off duty to save a young girl from drowning.

Marsh was relaxing by the pool when he noticed a 4-year-old girl struggling. He jumped into action to save her. The girl, who typically wears floaties, jumped in the pool without them. Marsh's quick response was only alerted by the sound of his feet on the concrete, but he sprinted 25 yards across the pool deck to intervene. The girl's mother expressed gratitude for Marsh's quick thinking and selfless act, stating, "I truly don’t know what would have happened had he not been on high alert and jumped in to save my sweet 4-year-old."

The Duluth Police Department also commended Marsh for his dedication to public safety and described his actions as a shining example of his commitment to serving others.

Two years ago this month, Amy Larimer underwent brain surgery performed by Dr. David McCracken to remove a cancerous tumor after going to Piedmont Newton's ER after experiencing episodes of dizziness and nausea for several months. This summer Amy celebrated her daughter’s wedding, and she can’t wait to begin her 18th year of teaching elementary school this August. The journey to get where she is today has been challenging, but she celebrates her victory as a brain cancer survivor and is thankful for the compassion and expert care she received at Piedmont Brain Tumor Center in Atlanta. She continues to have follow-up screenings every three months, but she finds peace knowing she is in good hands, where quality care has given her a new lease on life.

Back during the pandemic, it was easy for Barry Ingram to put off a colorectal screening that his Piedmont family medicine doctor recommended, but he ended up putting it off for three years— a decision that may have drastically changed the course of his life in the years to follow. His screening revealed he had colon cancer and needed eight inches of his colon removed.

Barry regrets not following through earlier on, and he now encourages other men to schedule regular hassle-free health screenings and not ignore them like he did. He’s thankful he finally listened to his provider because the outcome could have been even worse.

Colorectal screenings are now encouraged beginning at age 45. Don’t delay, take charge of your health and talk to your health care provider about scheduling a diagnostic screening today.

The affordability of and access to health care is limited for most of Honduras. The need for certain procedures, like knee replacements, is great.

Dr. Stephen Smith, a member of the Piedmont Clinic, is trying to do his part to fill that need. He recently returned from a medical mission trip to Honduras, where he and a team performed 35 knee replacements. The organization behind the trip, One World Surgery, has a wait list of thousands of people.

Piedmont Atlanta proudly donates critical medical supplies in support of these biannual mission trips.

Grade-school teacher Tomekia thought she was living right—exercising regularly, consciously eating healthier, fasting, and praying—so she never imagined having a terrible headache meant she was having a stroke. But when the headache didn’t improve and she started experiencing left-side weakness, she went to Piedmont Eastside's ER. The ER team immediately recognized her symptoms and gave her lifesaving treatment.
But what caused a stroke in an otherwise healthy woman? The cardiac team at Piedmont Heart Lawrenceville told her: Tomekia had had an undiagnosed hole in her heart since birth and needed surgery.

Even after her pain, her rush to the hospital, and her heart surgery, if you ask Tomekia about her ordeal, her first response is "God is so good, even on a bad day.” When she felt fear, Piedmont cardiologist Dr. Rowe reassured her. She says, “From the moment I walked into his office, he and his team were amazing. His bedside manners are impeccable. There wasn't a time during or after where I didn't have complete trust in him.”
Tomekia’s family, friends, and coworkers provided an incredible support system, but she also praises her care team at Piedmont. “From the moment I rolled in until the day I was discharged, everyone—the nurses, the doctors, the techs, the therapists and the dietitians—made my healing journey better.” And her strong faith sustained her through the days when she needed grace and encouragement.

“I ask God daily in my morning prayers and meditation to be used as a vessel and to help me to ‘Live with Purpose, on Purpose, for His Purpose,’” she says. “That was the moment that I began my healing journey. It’s part of my purpose to share my testimony with great hopes to help others in this journey called life.” We’re so glad we provided the quality care Tomeika needed so she can continue to live her purpose.

During his annual physical this year, Chuck Rawlins told his Piedmont primary care doctor at Eastside Crossing about his family history of heart disease—his dad died of a heart attack, and his mom had one but survived. Even though Chuck had no symptoms, his doctor recommended a coronary calcium scan at Piedmont Walton.

The scan revealed that Chuck had a near-total blockage of the largest heart artery, also known as the “widowmaker” because of its lethality. Chuck’s primary care physician quickly referred him to Piedmont Heart, and he underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery at Piedmont Atlanta. Chuck is back on his feet with the help of the recent cardiac rehabilitation he received at Piedmont Newton.

Today, Chuck is thankful for the prompt and highly integrated care he received when he needed it most, and he is thankful he remained committed to scheduling his annual physical, or the outcome may have been very different.

It's time to take charge of your health with hassle-free annual physicals close to home. Book today via Piedmont MyChart, online at piedmont.org or by calling your provider’s office directly.

When Tunisia discovered a lump in her breast, her former doctors brushed it off as a side effect from a vaccine. Two years later, she found a second lump and demanded a biopsy. She was diagnosed with cancer—but she had lost her trust in the medical community.

Then she came to Piedmont and met the surgeon who changed her mind. “I thought, ‘This person actually cares about me and really understands what I'm going through.’ I’d been thinking that nobody cared, because that’s what my experience was.”
Tunisia decided to “fight cancer with fashion” and turned her chemo sessions into a fashion show. For each appointment, she walked an imaginary runway into the treatment room, with friends and family helping her coordinate outfits, carry bags, and document the experience. “Instead of dreading chemo, I was looking forward to it because I’d be shopping, looking for my outfits; trying to pull it all together.”

Her vibrant energy uplifted the medical team and fellow patients. “It made everybody happier because [chemo] can be sad and traumatic. But when I came in … people could focus on something else for a little bit. I was able to shift the energy for everybody. I changed to the best version of me,” she says. And it all started with care that made a positive difference in her life.

At 27 weeks pregnant, Dynika Marshall walked into a Piedmont Urgent Care to get treatment for her sick firstborn when the care team suspected things were not quite right with her health. They checked her blood pressure and discovered it was dangerously high. She was rushed to Piedmont Eastside where she underwent an emergency C-section.

Her baby girl, Journi, spent three months in the NICU, overcoming challenges caused by preeclampsia. Despite these hurdles, Dynika is deeply grateful to Piedmont for saving both her life and her daughter’s. Now, she is sharing her story, supporting other mothers, and collaborating with our foundation to raise funds and awareness for preeclampsia and NICU care. We thank you, Dynika, for turning your experience into a mission to make a positive difference!

While patrolling the area, Snellville Police Officer Lieutenant Andre Sullivan, came across a car that was broken down on Scenic Highway. Lt. Sullivan figured the occupants of the car had run out of gas. Sullivan took a gas can, filled it, purchased a $40 QuikTrip gas gift card for future use. When he provided this to the family, he learned they were displaced, and the family was staying at a warming shelter.

Because of the situation, Lt. Sullivan took it upon himself to buy meals for the family, so they wouldn't go hungry. Lt. Sullivan even received a letter commendation from the Snellville Police Department because of his actions!

This is why Piedmont Eastside is honoring Lt. Sullivan as the April First Friday Hero. We thank him for his dedication and commitment to this community!

While pregnant with her second child, Dynika visited Urgent Care for her sick firstborn—but it turned into a life-saving moment for her. During the visit, the team checked her blood pressure and discovered it was dangerously high. At just 27 weeks pregnant, she was rushed to Piedmont Eastside, where she underwent an emergency C-section.

Her daughter, Journi, spent three months in the NICU, overcoming challenges caused by preeclampsia. Despite these hurdles, Dynika is deeply grateful to Piedmont for saving both her life and her daughter’s.

In 2022, the maternal mortality rate for Black women was 49.5 deaths per 100,000 live births—significantly higher than rates for White (19.0), Hispanic (16.9), and Asian (13.2) women. While maternal mortality rates decreased significantly across all age groups from 2021 to 2022, this stark disparity highlights the importance of raising awareness and advocating for equitable healthcare.

Now, she’s sharing her story, supporting other mothers, and collaborating with our foundation to raise funds and awareness for preeclampsia and NICU care. Thank you, Dynika, for turning your experience into a mission to make a positive difference.
