The body mechanics and why side sleepers often wake up in pain is legit. However, you don't need to buy a fancy pillow. Simply take one of your older pillows, cut it open, remove half of the filling (place this in a pillowcase) and sew each (the original pillow and the new one in the pillow case) closed. You now have a pillow that you can an form to go under the neck and that doesn't prop your head up higher than you need. It is very adjustable. Simple.
Also, consider trying to sleep with your hand above you pillow rather than under. This abduction of the shoulder is partially what can cause pain too.
I would ignore the purchase part of this video but listen to the kinesiology portion but I will leave that to you.
