The Baseball Story (Jeffrey Conner)
"I had played baseball my whole life. Little League, junior high, high school, American Legion--you name it, I played it. As it is with many little boys, I had always dreamed of being on the mound with the 'big boys.' Right after high school, my dream came true. The California Angels drafted me in the third round. I couldn't believe it! Me, Jeffrey D. Conner, the little boy with the big dream, was going to the pros! All those years of practicing and playing, of dreaming and fantasizing, were all about to become reality.
What a thrill it was to be out there on the mound pitching to players I had followed throughout my teenage years. I was in heaven. I'd been pitching for three years when it happened--every pitcher's worst fear--a shoulder injury. The pain was tremendous.
The team doctor sent me to see an orthopedist. After an examination, I was diagnosed with tendonitis in the shoulder. He prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. I was to take it for ten days and sit out games and practice there. After ten days of rest and medication, the pain was still there. I was given another ten days' worth of medicine. Ten more days of no playing. The pain persisted. Back to the doctor. After another examination, he told me there was nothing wrong. His diagnosis: The pain in my shoulder was all in my head. So I finished the season, pitching in pain.
During the off-season- I heard a chiropractor talking on the radio about shoulder injuries. I decided to give it a try. After examining me, the chiropractor discovered I had injured my deltoid muscle and the biceps tendon under the deltoid. The tendon kept popping out of its groove. He adjusted my shoulder, put the tendon back in place and gave me a series of exercises to strengthen my shoulder muscles.
Pain free, I pitched for seven more years. I had a great time during the ten years I spent living my lifelong dream. Now, at age twenty-eight, my baseball career had come to an end, although not through injury. My arm was healthy, but for me, baseball was over. I had to decide what I was going to do with the rest of my life. One day, while reminiscing over the glorious days I had spent in baseball, I remembered how my career had been saved by that chiropractor and how he had helped me continue living my dream. It suddenly hit me. I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to help people, especially athletes, the way I had been helped I wanted to be a doctor of chiropractic."
