to talk about hormones.

“What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy is available in different forms, including pills, patches, gels, sprays, and vaginal rings that work systemically (throughout the body). If you primarily have urinary problems or vaginal symptoms such as dryness, burning, and pain during s*x, then estrogen creams, vaginal inserts, and other local treatments may be sufficient.

How hormones can help

If you’re plagued by hot flashes, nothing delivers more effective relief than systemic HT, which typically entails taking estrogen and progesterone/progestin. If you have a uterus, you need to pair estrogen with progesterone/progestin or a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) to protect against abnormal thickening or cancer of the uterine lining. There are many ways to get this combo. For instance, you might use an estrogen patch and pair it with an IUD that contains progestin, opt for an oral pill that contains both estrogen and progestin, or take the medication Duavee, which includes estrogen as well as a SERM.”

as it heats up.☀️🕶️

“How to create your personal heat safety plan.

Planning is important because intense heat is occurring more often: a Climate Central analysis found 21 additional risky heat days, on average, for 232 out of 249 locations between 1970 and 2022.

1) Stay ahead of hot weather. Check apps, websites, TV, or radio for updates on weather today and in coming days. If local weather alerts are available by phone or text, sign up.

2) Have a cooling plan. When temperatures soar, you need to spend as much time as possible in cool spaces. Plan options if your home is likely to be too hot and unsafe to stay in. You may be able to stay with a neighbor or family member who has air conditioning until a heat wave passes. Many cities and towns have neighborhood splash pads for children, and open cooling centers or air-conditioned libraries, public buildings, or community centers to everyone — sometimes even overnight. Spending time in air-conditioned businesses or malls, or in a shady green space like a park, may help too.

3) Sip plenty of fluids. Water is the best choice. Skip sugary drinks and avoid caffeine or alcohol.

4) Use fans correctly. Fans help if surrounding air is relatively cool. If air temperatures are very high, it's important to dampen your clothes or skin to help keep your body from overheating, and move to a cooler location, if possible.

5) Know your personal risks and the signs of heat-related illness. If you have health problems or disabilities, or take certain medicines such as diuretics, talk to your doctor about the best ways for you to cope with heat. It's also essential to know the signs of heat-related illnesses, which range from heat rash and sunburn to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. This chart from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes the signs to look for and what you can do, particularly when heat becomes an emergency.”

“We all experience abdominal pain in our lives. But what type of abdominal pain signals appendix pain or appendicitis? Since appendicitis requires urgent medical attention, knowing the symptoms and when to seek help can be lifesaving.

What is appendicitis?

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small pouch attached to the large intestine. While the role of the appendix is unclear, inflammation of the appendix can lead to swelling, pain, and, if left untreated, rupture. Because of these risks, appendicitis is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

Symptoms of appendicitis

Typically, appendicitis starts with abdominal pain near the belly button. Within a few hours, the pain shifts to the lower right side of the abdomen, where the appendix is usually located.

This pain intensifies over time. It tends to worsen when you press on it (and is often even worse if you quickly stop pressing), when walking, taking deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing. Although many people refer to it as "appendix pain," the discomfort is more accurately described as "abdominal pain" because conditions other than appendicitis can cause similar symptoms.”

Or cooking in the outdoors can be iconic. Here are some safety tips to make sure all are happy healthy!

“General Rules for Outdoor Food Safety

Plan ahead: decide what you are going to eat and how you will prepare it; then plan what equipment you will need.
Pack safely: use a cooler, or pack foods in the frozen state with a cold source.
Whether in the wild or on the high seas, protect yourself and your family by washing your hands with soap and water or bring hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol before and after handling food.
Raw meats may contain bacteria, so keep raw foods separate from other foods.
Don’t bring perishable meat or poultry products without a cold source to keep them safe.
Bring disposable wipes, hand sanitizer or biodegradable soap for hand- and dishwashing.
If using a cooler, leftover food is safe only if the cooler still has ice in it. Otherwise, discard leftover food.”

“What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a “silent” bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decrease leading to a decrease in bone strength. Bones affected by osteoporosis may become so weak that fractures (broken bones) may occur spontaneously or as a result of a minor fall or normal stresses, such as bending, lifting, or coughing.

What causes osteoporosis?
In women, osteoporosis is often caused by bone loss that occurs with the hormonal changes (low levels of estrogen) that come with menopause. Estrogen plays an important role in building and maintaining your bones. After menopause, your body makes very little estrogen.

Who gets osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a common cause of fractures in postmenopausal women and in older men. It affects more women than men. Of the estimated 10 million Americans with osteoporosis, more than 8 million (80%) are women. In the United States, osteoporosis affects one in four women aged 65 or older, but younger women can also get osteoporosis.”

It’s tick season!
What can you do to prevent ticks bites…

“Each of these steps adds an extra layer of protection and can help you enjoy the outdoors safely:

Use tick repellents
Tick-proof clothing and gear
Dress for tick safety
Bring tick-ready supplies with you
Use tick repellents

Different types of repellents can help protect you against tick bites.

The three main choices of repellents are:

DEET
picaridin
natural repellents

Tick-proof your clothing

Ticks can attach to clothing and then crawl onto your skin. The best way to prevent this is to treat your clothes with permethrin, an EPA-registered insecticide that kills ticks and mosquitoes on contact.

Permethrin can be used on clothing and gear (such as shoes, hats, lawn chairs, backpacks, and tents). Do not apply permethrin directly to the skin. Permethrin is safe for people, including children and women who are pregnant or nursing, but it is toxic to cats.

Are there any repellents or ingredients that are not effective against ticks?

The following are not effective, or only minimally effective, against ticks:

citronella
botanical oils, including cinnamon, peppermint, sandalwood, geranium, and soybean
vitamin supplements and herbal remedies
repellent bracelets”

“What is neuroplasticity and what's the connection to cognitive fitness?

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt throughout life by modifying its structure, functions, or neural pathways.

Cognitive fitness — the ability to think, learn, and remember effectively — depends on a healthy and adaptable brain. By actively engaging in behaviors that support neuroplasticity, you can strengthen cognitive function and potentially reduce the risk of age-related decline.

Keys to cognitive fitness

Maintaining cognitive fitness involves a combination of mental, physical, and social activities. Each of these factors plays a role in supporting neuroplasticity and promoting lifelong brain health.

A healthy body supports a healthy brain. This means it is important to manage your health conditions.

Lifestyle choices are also crucial. Maintaining cognitive fitness as you age is best achieved by combining these key approaches:”

“Who is affected by lupus?

About 9 out of 10 people diagnosed with lupus are women aged 15 to 44, but men are affected as well. Notably, it's more common in African American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native women. African American women are three times more likely to get lupus, and they may develop the disease at a younger age and have more serious and life-threatening complications than non-Hispanic white women.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause pain and inflammation in the body. Symptoms can flare up at any time and are different for every person. Lupus disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority women. Although lupus cannot be cured, medications can prevent flares, treat symptoms, and reduce organ damage and other problems.

What is lupus?

Lupus is a chronic (long-term) autoimmune disease that can damage many parts of the body. Autoimmune diseases occur when a body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy cells, tissues, and organs. These attacks cause inflammation that leads to tissue damage, which may be permanent in some cases.”

Let’s take a to talk relationships.

“The Four C’s of Healthy Relationships

Consider the four C’s – communication, caring, conflict resolution, and cultural differences – when looking for red flags. The things you say (verbal communication) and the way you say them (non-verbal communication) both matter when communicating. The first two communication red flags to look for are lying and expressing criticism toward you or the relationship. If your loved ones make frequent comments that blame you for their feelings or attack you with harsh words, this is a sign that your relationship is unhealthy. Non-verbal communication that is harmful to relationships includes intimidating posture, eye-rolling, and hostile facial expressions (e.g., showing boredom or aggression).

Paying attention to communication is very important during conflict resolution. When people begin to talk to each other in ways that are critical, defensive, disrespectful, mocking, or completely shut down, communication becomes destructive and should be considered a red flag. Respect is the foundation for communication in healthy relationships, and people in healthy relationships will take responsibility for their feelings and actions during conflict. Caring feelings are also notable in conversations when people in healthy relationships are talking with each other.”

“What is Cushing syndrome?

Cushing syndrome, also known as hypercortisolism, occurs when you have higher-than-normal levels of cortisol in your body for a significant duration of time. Cortisol is a hormone made by your adrenal glands, two small glands located next to the kidneys. You can have high levels of cortisol if your adrenal glands overproduce it, or if you take cortisol-like medications (glucocorticoids) at high doses for a long time to treat another condition. The high cortisol levels can cause various symptoms and possible health complications.

In normal amounts, cortisol helps your body maintain blood pressure and blood sugar level, reduce inflammation, and regulate salt balance, among other functions. Cortisol is also directly connected to the body's stress response. Your body releases cortisol to help you deal with stressful situations.”
