Gasping is not normal breathing.

When someone collapses, those strange gasps or snoring sounds can confuse people into thinking the person is still breathing.

In reality, gasping can be a sign of cardiac arrest.

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start compressions.

When in doubt — start CPR.

6.5% isn’t good enough.

That’s Napa County’s reported out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rate.
California averages closer to 10.5%.

That gap is lives.

If someone collapsed at your workplace tomorrow… would your team act immediately?

Every minute without CPR and an AED drops survival 7–10%.
In many Napa & Solano County workplaces, EMS can be 10+ minutes away.

Those first minutes belong to your team.

Training shouldn’t be a checkbox.
It should build confidence.

If you’re responsible for safety, let’s close the gap.

🚨 Myth Monday 🚨

MYTH: CPR brings people back like in the movies.

You’ve seen it — a few compressions and suddenly they wake up coughing and talking.

REALITY: That’s Hollywood.

CPR does not restart the heart.
It keeps blood flowing to the brain until an AED and advanced care arrive.

In over 20 years as a Battalion Chief, Fire Marshal, and EMT, I never once had someone suddenly wake up during CPR like you see on TV.

What actually saves lives:
✔️ Immediate, high-quality compressions
✔️ Early AED use
✔️ Confident, trained responders

Don’t settle for a run-of-the-mill CPR class.
Train for real emergencies.

MYTH MONDAY

“Having a fire extinguisher means we’re covered.”

Truth: Equipment ≠ Preparedness.

Most workplaces have extinguishers…

But does your team know:
• When to fight vs evacuate?
• Which extinguisher to grab?
• How to actually use it under pressure?

🔥 Quick Tip:
Use the PASS method:
Pull the pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Sweep side to side

And remember — if the fire is larger than a small trash can or you don’t have a clear exit behind you, evacuate.

At Heart First Training, emergency preparedness is built into every CPR & First Aid class — taught by a retired Fire Marshal.

Don’t settle for a run-of-the-mill workplace CPR class.
Train for real emergencies.

💔 What would you do if a coworker collapsed at work? 💔

Every minute without CPR decreases a person’s chance of survival by 10%.
That means in just 5 minutes, survival odds are cut in half.

🫀 CPR and AED skills aren’t just nice to have—they save lives.

🚩 FIRE WEATHER WATCH = TIME TO PREPARE 🚩
With wildfires already sparking this season, it’s clear we’re back in the swing of things. 🔥 Monday brings high fire danger across the Northern and Central Sacramento Valley due to strong winds and low humidity from 2 AM to 8 PM.

Even though this is a Fire Weather Watch (not a full Red Flag Warning yet), conditions can escalate fast. Preparation now prevents panic later.

✅ Pack a Go Bag
✅ Know 2 evacuation routes
✅ Review your family or workplace emergency plan
✅ Check your evacuation zone

At Heart First Training — Emergency Preparedness, we go beyond standard CPR and first aid by helping businesses prepare for real-world threats like wildfire readiness, earthquake response, and more—before it becomes an emergency.

🔥 Attention, Northern California! 🔥

At Heart First Training, we often hear about the importance of listening to warnings for hurricanes and tornadoes, but we need to extend that same level of vigilance to Red Flag Fire Warnings. As we enter this time of year, the Northern dry winds bring heightened fire risks, and we must be proactive in our preparations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Red Flag Warning for Solano County from Tuesday, November 5th at 11 AM until Thursday, November 7th at 7 AM. This warning is due to low relative humidity and gusty northerly winds, creating conditions ripe for wildfires.

✅ Here are some important steps to take:
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather updates and alerts.
- Prepare Your Home: Clear away dry leaves and debris near your property and create defensible space.
- Have a Plan: Make sure you know your evacuation routes and have a go-bag ready.

Let’s stay vigilant and prioritize safety during this critical time! Together, we can help protect our homes and communities. Stay safe! 🌲🔥
