Hospice of the Central Peninsula

Hospice of the Central Peninsula Welcome to the official Hospice of the Central Peninsula page. Hospice of the Central Peninsula is a Volunteer Hospice. "You matter because you are you.

It involves a team of trained volunteers in an approach tailored to help a client or their family deal with life limiting condition. Hospice's blend of compassion and skill helps the client to live each day with comfort and dignity, retain control over their lives, and discover renewed meaning and purpose to life. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die." - Cicely Saunders founder of the Hospice Movement.

The State of Alaska requires us to accept patients with 12 months or less as the prognosis to be elligible for "end-of-life". For medical hospice services (not provided by us) they require 6 months or less (Medicare requirement). Many doctors are rightfully hesitant to place a number on someone's life expectancy because none of us have an expiration date stamped on our forehead.

Please note that if your doctor does refer you and says that yes you have 12mos or less that does not mean if you live a day over that timeline that we cut you loose - it simply means the doctor and our office redo the paperwork to keep you with us.

We meet you where you're at, on your timeline, of your journey.

Barbara Karnes, RN explains why doctors timelines can be misleading and how recognizing the signs of approaching death can better guide families and caregivers.

It's Volunteer Recognition Day!

Hospice of the Central Peninsula could not be effective in our community without the amazing volunteers that keep our program running. From our all volunteer Board of Directors, to our direct-care, office, and Camp Mend-A-Heart volunteers we are only able to serve the Central Peninsula because of all of their hard work and passion for our programs!

Thanks to our volunteers we were able to help:
23 new end-of-life clients (one month we had 10 active clients!) for a total of 592 volunteer hours!

We had 2297 loan closet "encounters" in the office. Our office volunteers gave us a total of 515 hours of their time this year helping us keep things running smoothly!

Camp Mend-A-Heart volunteers gave us at least 295 hours (when you add up each volunteer's time). It was one of our largest camps to date for campers and oh so fun!

And our 11 member board of directors gave us at least 607 hours in 2025 (but several of them are *really bad* at turning in their volunteer hours so we know it's MUCH higher! ;) )

We love our volunteers and could not do any of this without you.
Please help us thank our amazing volunteers today (and every day!)
