🌸 Women’s History Month | Honoring Women in Medicine

Dr. Helen Brooke Taussig is widely recognized as the founder of pediatric cardiology.

She co-developed the groundbreaking “blue baby” procedure, which successfully treated infants born with congenital heart defects and saved countless lives. Her work helped establish modern cardiac care for children.

Despite facing significant challenges, including partial deafness, Dr. Taussig’s perseverance and dedication to research transformed pediatric medicine.

This Women’s History Month, we honor the women whose courage and innovation continue to shape healthcare today.

🌸 Women’s History Month | Honoring Women in Healthcare

This month, the Women’s Health Center is celebrating the women whose dedication, innovation, and leadership have shaped healthcare and improved the lives of women and families everywhere.

We begin by honoring Dr. Virginia Apgar, a physician whose work transformed newborn care around the world.

In 1952, Dr. Apgar developed the Apgar Score, a quick and simple evaluation used immediately after birth to assess a newborn’s health. Today, this lifesaving tool is used globally to ensure babies receive the care they need during their first moments of life.

Her innovation continues to protect mothers and babies every day.

Throughout March, we will continue highlighting women who have shaped healthcare — and the incredible women who provide care right here in our own community.

🌸 Women’s History Month | The Legacy of Nursing

Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing.

During the Crimean War, she transformed patient care by improving sanitation, hygiene, and hospital practices, dramatically reducing mortality rates. Her work laid the foundation for professional nursing education and standards that continue today.

In skilled nursing facilities like Eden Valley Care Center, her legacy lives on through the compassionate care provided by nurses and caregivers every day.

We are proud to share that Eden Valley Care Center has been awarded an annual grant of approximately $20,000 from the Community Foundation for Monterey County through the Margaret L. Musser Restricted Fund.

This generous support directly strengthens the operations of Eden Valley Care Center and helps ensure continued, compassionate care for our residents and families.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Community Foundation and to the legacy of Margaret L. Musser for investing in the health, dignity, and well-being of our seniors and our South Monterey County community.

We’re proud to share that our Foundation has been selected to participate in this year’s Monterey County Gives! campaign. 💙

Through the incredible support of our community, we’ve already been able to replace several beds at Eden Valley Care Center — and our residents feel the difference every day. Now our goal is to finish the job and complete the upgrade for the remaining beds.

Each modern, specialized bed costs approximately $3,000, and provides comfort, safety, mobility support, and dignity for the residents who rely on them.
With your help, we can finish this project and ensure every resident has a bed that truly supports their well-being.
