It is a common myth that running is hard on joints and leads to arthritis. We wanted to put this myth to rest so we read up on the latest research. One study we found showed that running improves knee joint health in novice runners compared to sedentary individuals. Two more studies found that running does not result in changes or damage in hip joints. The final study we looked at was the most surprising. It showed that middle-aged men who were long-term runners had 20% greater spinal disc height! (Decreased disc height indicates degenerative changes, which is sometimes referred to as “arthritis in the spine”). Furthermore, the study concluded that increased spinal disc health correlated to increased years of running and increased weekly running milage.

Fun Fact Friday! Did you something as simple as a daily walk can help control your low back pain?
If you are experiencing chronic pain, try going on walks for pain relief and functional improvements! This systematic review and meta-analysis that was published in 2015 looked at 26 studies to examine the effects of walking on pain and function in people with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Findings concluded that there were improvements in both pain and function with regular walking.  Although this article specifically looked at people with osteoarthritis, chronic low back pain, and fibromyalgia it came to the conclusion that walking may be beneficial for all types of chronic musculoskeletal pain. If you continue to struggle with pain or functional issues call and schedule an appointment with one of our chiropractors!
