As we continue our Doctors' Day spotlights, we’re proud to celebrate Spine Surgeon Dr. Gregory Callanan of Shore Orthopaedic University Associates, who joined the practice in 2023 after completing his fellowship training in Comprehensive and Complex Adult Spine Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Callanan was inspired to become a spine surgeon so he could make a tangible difference in people’s lives by alleviating pain and restoring mobility, working in a highly specialized field. In the spine, small changes can have a profound impact on a person’s quality of life.

Dr. Callanan is a NJ native who attended Monmouth University and Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Rowan University-Inspira Health Network. However, his fellowship in Comprehensive and Complex Adult Spine Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania is what truly honed his expertise in advanced spine techniques and exposed him to some of the most innovative approaches in the field. One of his most rewarding experiences during his fellowship was a mission trip with Penn’s Caribbean Global Outreach Program, where he performed complex spinal deformity surgeries alongside Penn Faculty.

With his patient-centered approach, Dr. Callanan builds a collaborative relationship, taking the time to truly understand each patient’s unique goals and concerns. He involves them in every step of the decision-making process, tailoring treatment plans to their specific needs and ensuring they work together to achieve the best possible outcome for their health and quality of life.
“The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing my patients regain their mobility, reduce their pain, and return to their daily activities with improved quality of life. I find it incredibly fulfilling to know that I’ve helped them achieve the best possible outcome for their unique needs,” he says.
Dr. Callanan wants people to know that spine surgery isn’t always as invasive as they may think it is. “Spine surgery, particularly minimally invasive and motion-sparing techniques, can often provide quicker recovery times and less post-operative pain, compared to traditional methods. These advanced approaches allow patients to return to their daily activities faster while still achieving excellent long-term outcomes.”

“Their dedication and seamless teamwork ensure our patients receive the highest quality of care before, during and after surgery, creating an environment where both patients and surgeons can trust that every detail is handled with expertise and compassion.”
Outside of work, Dr. Callanan loves spending time outdoors surfing and practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which help him stay physically active and focused. He also enjoys traveling to new places and spending quality time with family, balancing the demands of his work with experiences that keep him grounded and energized.
