Two infants in Kentucky have died of pertussis (also known as whooping cough) in the past six months. According to CDC data, reported cases increased to 12,513 in 2025, up from 7,321 in 2024. Pertussis is a highly contagious infection of the lungs that can cause serious health problems in small children. Vaccination is the best way to prevent whooping cough with the DTaP vaccine given at 2 months of age, with subsequent doses at 4 months and 6 months, and boosters at 15-18 months and 4-6 years. Somerset Pediatric and Adolescent Associates is truly fostering a love for reading and learning from an early age with their Reach Out and Read Program. Providing high-quality books at each well visit can spark imagination and lifelong learning. We are so happy to do this for our patients.

Reading with infants and young children can strengthen their relationships with their parents and caregivers and help support brain development. A new policy from AAP says pediatricians should encourage parents to read with their children from birth. Research shows reading together at young ages can build the foundation for language and cognitive development and help set the stage for school readiness. Sunday May 25, 2025 is the 42nd Annual National Missing Children's Day.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th as National Missing Children’s Day. Each year, the U.S. Department of Justice commemorates Missing Children’s Day to honor the heroic and exemplary efforts of agencies, organizations, and individuals to protect children.

Missing Children’s Day is dedicated to encouraging parents, guardians, caregivers, and others concerned with the well-being of children to make child safety a priority. It serves as a reminder to continue our efforts to reunite missing children with their families and an occasion to honor those dedicated to this noble cause. As part of this initiative, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a National Missing Children’s Day Poster Contest, which invites fifth-grade students to create a poster to include the theme “Bringing Our Missing Children Home”. The picture below is the contest winner for 2024.
