A dental implant is designed to replace a missing tooth from the root up. It starts with a fixture, which is placed into the jawbone where the natural tooth root used to be. Over time, the bone grows around this implant, securing it firmly in place, just like a real root.

Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, an abutment is attached. This connects the implant to a crown, which is the visible part of the tooth that sits above the gum.
