At CGE, smoke-free isn’t about control — it’s about care.
Emerging research shows that addressing to***co use during recovery can strengthen long-term outcomes, not hinder them.
Explore why our smoke-free approach is part of healing, dignity, and hope: https://www.cge-nj.org/why-cge-has-been-smoke-free-and-why-the-research-is-confirming-it-was-the-right-move/

At The Center for Great Expectations (CGE), we have maintained a smoke-free campus for years. For us, it’s more than a policy, it’s a deeply held belief: Recovery is most effective when barriers to health are removed while meeting people where they are. This means addressing to***co use, one of ...

March is Women’s History Month and today, International Women's Day—a time to honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of women past and present.

At The Center for Good Expectations, we celebrate the women who lead with compassion, lift up their communities, and inspire change every day. From the mothers and daughters we serve to the dedicated staff and volunteers who support them, your courage and determination make a lasting impact.

This month, we recognize the stories, achievements, and voices of women everywhere—and recommit ourselves to creating a future where every woman has the opportunity, support, and respect she deserves.

We’re proud to highlight our S.T.A.R.T. (Substance Use Treatment and Recovery Team) program, which provides free, in-home and telehealth support for pregnant and postpartum women on their recovery journey in honor of Women’s History Month.

Through counseling, peer recovery support, and integrated doula care, S.T.A.R.T. helps mothers overcome barriers to treatment, strengthen the bond with their babies, and build healthier, more stable futures.

Solomon Carter Fuller helped change how the world understands mental illness.

At a time when judgment and punishment defined care, he brought science, rigor, and humanity to psychiatry. Through groundbreaking brain research and compassionate clinical work, he helped establish mental illness as a medical condition, not a moral failing.

As one of the first Black psychiatrists and neuroscientists, his contributions were often overlooked, but his impact endures. His legacy reminds us: recovery begins when dignity replaces blame.

New Jersey Assemblywoman Shama Haider (NJ State House Tours) visit to CGE offered a meaningful opportunity to highlight the organization’s mission and the critical role it plays for women across the state. Her thoughtful engagement and clear understanding of CGE’s work underscored how closely her leadership as Chair of the Children, Families & Food Security Committee aligns with the services CGE provides—supporting homeless pregnant and parenting individuals and families through trauma‑informed care, substance use and mental health services, and comprehensive wraparound support that helps build healthier futures for mothers and their children.

Assemblywoman Haider joins our champion Assemblyman Joe Danielsen who has been advocating for CGE for over three years, securing legislative appropriations which are critical to funding for our work.

We are committed to enlightening the entire body of State legislators to the resources available for addressing New Jersey’s maternal health crisis. With 58% of maternal mortality cases in the first year postpartum associated with substance use disorders, CGE is a critical resource in reducing and preventing maternal deaths and improving outcomes for families statewide.

Mamie Phipps Clark revealed the truth science could no longer ignore.

At a time when racism was normalized and children’s pain was dismissed, she showed how segregation damages young minds. Through rigorous research and a deep commitment to community, she documented the psychological harm of inequality and turned evidence into action.

As a psychologist and civil rights researcher, her work helped dismantle legal segregation, challenged the myth of racial neutrality, and affirmed that children deserve dignity in order to thrive.

Her legacy reminds us: justice is a mental health issue, and truth can heal.
