One thing we hear from patients all the time is:

“I hate going to the dentist.”

And you’re definitely not alone.

Studies suggest around 36% of people experience dental anxiety, and about 12% have extreme dental fear.

Many patients tell us things like:

• “I’m embarrassed because it’s been a long time.”
• “I’m worried it might hurt.”
• “I just don’t like the sound of the tools.”

The truth is, dentists hear these concerns every day — and our goal is always to make your visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

At Somerset Smiles, we believe dental care should feel supportive, not intimidating.

No lectures.
No judgment.
Just a caring team that wants to help you take care of your health.

If it’s been a while since your last appointment, that’s okay. We’re here when you’re ready.

Around Somerset, a lot of mornings start with a good cup of coffee ☕

But coffee is also one of the most common causes of tooth staining over time.

Dark beverages like coffee, tea, soda, and red wine contain pigments that can gradually settle into the tiny pores in tooth enamel. That’s what can give teeth a dull or yellow appearance.

A few simple habits can help reduce staining:

• Drink water after coffee
• Avoid sipping slowly for long periods
• Use a straw when possible with iced drinks
• Keep up with regular cleanings

Professional dental cleanings remove surface stains and help keep your smile looking bright and healthy.

And if you’re looking for a bigger improvement, professional whitening can make a noticeable difference.

Now we’re curious…

How many cups of coffee fuel your day?

Did you know cavities aren’t actually caused by sugar alone?

Cavities form when bacteria in your mouth feed on leftover food and carbohydrates on your teeth. When those bacteria break down sugars and starches, they create acids that slowly weaken tooth enamel.

Over time, that acid can create a small hole in the tooth — what we call a cavity.

Common contributors include:
• Sugary drinks and snacks
• Sticky foods that stay on teeth
• Frequent snacking throughout the day
• Poor brushing or flossing habits
• Skipping regular dental cleanings

The good news? Cavities are very preventable.

Healthy habits like brushing twice daily, flossing, drinking plenty of water, and visiting the dentist regularly can help protect your smile for years to come.

Professional cleanings remove buildup that brushing alone can’t reach and help catch small issues before they become bigger problems.

If it’s been a while since your last visit, we’d love to help you build a healthy foundation for your smile.

Our Practice

Our practice was established in 1957 by Dr. King’s father, Dr. B.E. King. In 1982, Dr. Katherine King joined her father’s practice. The practice has maintained a progressive, high quality, high tech program based on exceptional clinical skills and patient service.

Dr. Katherine King has 30 plus years of clinical experience. The practice employs two licensed dental hygienists, two expanded duties dental assistants and a two-person front office staff trained in insurance billing, scheduling, and patient services.

Dr. Nissen recently graduated from the University of Louisville Dental School and joined the practice in May of this year. Dr. Nissen grew up in Somerset KY and is thrilled to give back to the community that gave him so much growing up.

A high emphasis is placed on continuing education for the dentist and hygienists as well as all staff members. We annually far exceed the requirements set by the KY Board of Dentistry for continuing education. Dr. King is active in the KY Dental Association and the American Dental Association. Dr. King has served as voluntary faculty for both the University of KY School of Dentistry and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. In both schools, our practice has been a preceptor for students.
