Back to School Luau 2025

Cocopah’s Early Steps Program partnered with tribal departments and local agencies to provide students with all the materials needed for the successful start of the new school year.

A total of 40 families attended and 140 backpacks were distributed. The event took place Friday, July 18th at the Cocopah Cultural Center.

Cocopah tribal departments that contributed to the effort included Wellness Center/THMP, Head Start, Day Care, EPO, Native Connections, Education, Cultural Resources, CVT, and Museum who kindly allowed us to use the Cultural Center.

Local partners that participated included Arizona PBS, Child & Family Resources, Somerton Public Library, Arizona Children’s Association, Onvida Health, Regional Center for Border Health, IHS Benefits, IHS Healthy Promotions, IHS Public Nurses, and First Things First.

During the event the Regional Center for Border Health provided biometrics, nutrition, immunization and physicals for children and adults.

AZ PBS Kids 2025 Ready For Kindergarten

Cocopah kids who successfully completed this year’s program celebrated with the organization's lead character Super Why!
Each year AZ PBS Kids provides children and their parents with skills and activities to get families ready for kindergarten.
The celebration was held at the Cocopah Cultural center on Friday, June 20th.

Former Cocopah Judge Maria Elena Cruz now sits on the bench in the highest court in the State of Arizona. The investiture ceremony was held in Yuma Friday, May 30th.
Cocopah Chairwoman Sherry Cordova was among the speakers who paid tribute to Justice Cruz and her many accomplishments leading up to this moment. Cocopah bird singers and dancers kicked off the event.

Plan for alternating lane restrictions at Pacific Avenue in Yuma beginning May 23

Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time

The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan ahead for alternating lane restrictions at Pacific Avenue in Yuma for maintenance work.

The following daytime restrictions will occur from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 23, for utility valve work:

Northbound Pacific Avenue (Avenue 2E) between 24th Street and 18th Street will be reduced to one lane.
The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.
A 14-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
The following overnight alternating lane restrictions will occur from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Wednesday, May 28, and ending the morning of Friday, May 30, for milling and paving:

Northbound Pacific Avenue will be reduced to one lane between 24th and 18th streets.
Southbound Pacific Avenue will be reduced to one lane between 32nd Street and 23rd Lane.
A 14 foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.
The following will begin at 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, through 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, for additional utility valve work:

Northbound Pacific Avenue (Avenue 2E) between 24th and 18th streets will be reduced to one lane.
The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.
A 14-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
The following daytime restrictions will occur from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, June 5, for signal loop detection installation work:

Northbound Pacific Avenue (Avenue 2E) between 24th Street and 18th Street will be reduced to one lane.
The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.
A 14-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
Delays are likely, so travelers should allow extra travel time. Drivers should obey posted signs, speed limits and traffic control devices and use caution around construction personnel.

Hundreds of people turned out Saturday, April 12 for the second annual Cocopah Earth Day Festival. The event featured live bands, food, vendors, raffle prizes and activities including a petting farm from Saddles of Joy and archery practice to name a few.

In her first appearance at the event Miss Cocopah Jocentah Marie Miller welcomed attendees. Cocopah Council members Florence Fitch and Jennifer Townsend served as emcees. Cocopah Chairwoman Sherry Cordova shared her thoughts on the importance of taking care of the Earth as the Earth also takes care of us.

An estimated 60 people came out to the Cocopah North Reservation along the Colorado River on April 5 as a show of their support for American Veterans. Here are some scenes of the Second Annual Veterans Appreciation River Walk. This event is a collaboration of the Cocopah Indian Tribe and local Veterans.
