Speech vs. Language: What’s the Difference? 🗣️📖

Speech and language are closely related but not the same! Understanding the difference can help with communication skills and speech therapy progress.

🔹 Speech = How we say sounds and words. It includes:
✅ Articulation (pronouncing sounds clearly)
✅ Fluency (smooth vs. stuttering speech)
✅ Voice (tone, pitch, and volume)

🔹 Language = The words we use and how we put them together to share ideas. It includes:
✅ Vocabulary (knowing and understanding words)
✅ Grammar (structuring sentences)
✅ Social communication (using language appropriately in conversations)

The simple answer: Straws promote oral motor development while traditional sippy cups can actually be detrimental to our little one’s speech development.

The long answer: Sippy cups promote a tongue forward posture and encourage a suckle-like pattern similar to the pattern that infants use on the bottle. As babies age (6+ months), they develop a more mature swallow pattern that requires dissociation of the lips, tongue, and jaw. Sippy cups do not provide this and inhibit these patterns from occurring.

Straws and open-cups promote the following:

✅Dissociation (moving separately) of the jaw, tongue, and lips

✅Tongue retraction (tongue pulling back) during swallowing and promotes an overall normal resting tongue posture.

✅Lip rounding and puckering

✅Cheek & Lip contraction/compression to support the straw or cup without use of the tongue

✅Jaw stability
