What kind of teaching becomes dangerous enough that someone bribes the authorities to kill the teacher?

In the seventh century, the Chan master Huike — Bodhidharma’s successor — was accused of speaking “demonic words.” Rivals sent emissaries to dismantle his community. Those emissaries joined him instead.

Eventually, his opponents bribed the authorities, and he was executed.

But the biography that preserves his life is not a story of rebellion. It records something more unsettling: clarity recognized without formal rank, teaching embodied rather than institutionalized.

New essay:
Huike: The Zen (Chan) Master They Killed

A historical study of Huike, the Chan master executed for his teaching, and how direct insight can challenge institutional authority.
